Ford Motor Company has just selected Compact Power, Inc. (CPI), (part of the of LG Chemical family of companies), as their supplier of lithium-ion battery packs for the 2011 Ford Focus Electric for the vehicles sold in the United States.
Compact Power or CPI is out of Troy, Michigan. They plan to begin battery pack assembly for the Focus Electric in 2011. They also want to “finalize a production site in the United States”.
However for starters, these lithium-ion cells will be built in Korea by CPI parent company LG Chem. LG Chem will then give the batteries to CPI to localize their cell production at their new site in Holland, Michigan!!
Ford’s electric vehicle strategy includes:
- the Transit Connect Electric Vehicle,
- the Ford Focus Electric Vehicle,
- the two next-generation hybrid electric vehicles and
- a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)
