COP16 – Climate Chance Conference – Coming Soon to Cancun, Mexico

Mexico will be hosting The Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Framework Convention Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC) in Cancun from November 29 until December 10.

At COP16, for the first time, there will be a process and spirit of inclusion for all parties – delegates, as well as non-governmental organizations and the private sector. Mexico recognizes that climate change is the major global environmental challenge of this century and is working hard to make this an engaging and progressive event.

Over the next few weeks, COP16 will be making information on the environmental projects  — such as geothermal, solar, reforestation,  and sustainability — happening in Mexico.

From now until the conference you can expect more information on some of the innovative initiatives and environmental leadership happening around the country, including;

  • Creation of a national fund to support electricity from renewable sources; identification of 42 gas and 13 biogas projects;
  • Use of the Trust to Save Electricity to replace refrigerator equipment;
  • Replacement of open fires and stoves with efficient wood burning stoves;
  • Development of sustainable housing, including awarding 176,000 green mortgage loans;
  • Reforestation of 1.1 million hectares, so far, marking a 36 percent improvement; and,
  • Conservation of 2.2 million acres through “payment for environmental services” program.
