## Marines Become First Military Organization to Purchase All-Electric Commercial Truck

Smith Electric Vehicles today announced the purchase of two all-electric Smith Newton
trucks by the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps becomes the first military
organization to order Smith Newtons off the Government Services Administration (
GSA) schedule. They will deliver the trucks to Camp Pendleton, Calif., which is
the Corps’ largest West Coast training facility. Additionally, Camp Pendleton is
home to the First Marine Expeditionary Force. “We’re proud to support the Marine
Corps’ efforts for a cleaner [environment and improved energy efficiency](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/02/solarwindow-announces-raynergy-tek-collaboration-pursuing-high-volume-production-of-electricity-generating-windows/)
at Camp Pendleton,” said Bryan Hansel, President and CEO of Smith Electric. Furthermore,
the Marines are setting a strong example for the other branches of our armed services.
Together, we all work to address America’s [energy and efficiency](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/01/energy-upgrade-california-play-your-part-and-win/)
concerns.

## Why The Marines??

A September report was issued by the Center for a New American Security, which focuses
on addressing key issues related to national defense and policy. It strongly recommended
that, in light of pressing financial and security concerns, America’s armed forces
should set an ambitious and strategic goal of transitioning away from oil dependency
by 2040. This recommendation highlights the critical need for the military to explore
[alternative energy sources](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/05/5-areas-where-you-can-switch-to-alternate-sources-of-energy-and-happily-avoid-fossil-fuels/)
and technologies. Such technologies could enhance operational efficiency, improve
energy resilience, reduce vulnerability to oil supply disruptions, and ultimately
contribute to overall national security. Emphasizing a shift towards [renewable energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/11/protect-arctic-wildlife-refuge-for-future-generations/)
solutions will not only align military objectives with environmental sustainability
but also set an influential example within the broader context of climate change
initiatives. This shift will showcase America’s commitment to innovative energy
strategies.

The Marines have already set out to reduce it energy use 30 percent by 2015. They
will also increase reliance on renewable electrical energy to 25 percent by 2025.
Hoorah!!

Smith Electric produces the Newton, which is the only medium duty (class 4-7) all-
electric commercial truck on the GSA schedule. The trucks will be built in Smith
Electric’s Kansas City, Mo., plant. They are scheduled for delivery to Camp Pendleton
in February 2011.

## Newton Electric Truck

The Newton delivers a top speed of 55 mph; moreover, it offers end users battery
ranges from 50 to 120 miles on a single charge. This range is ideal for base deliveries
and personnel transport applications. Additionally, Smith vehicles provide a payload
of over 16,000 pounds and are powered by the latest in Lithium-ion [battery cell technology](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/05/bmw-i-invest-in-green-lithium-mangrove-technology/),
power management, and direct drive trains. Consequently, they produce zero emissions
and are nearly silent.

The Marine Corps is the first military organization to incorporate Smith Newtons
into its fleet. This move paves the way for a more sustainable and environmentally
friendly approach to logistics and transportation. In doing so, it joins some of
the world’s largest delivery-based companies, including Frito-Lay, Staples, Coke,
AT&T, and PG&E. These companies have recognized the [benefits of switching to electric vehicles](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/02/green-cars-benefits-for-you-and-the-planet/).

## Reduce Carbon Footprint

They have already purchased all-electric Newtons to replace diesel trucks on urban
delivery routes. They recognize the urgent need for sustainable transportation solutions.
This change significantly reduces their carbon footprints. It also lowers their
operating costs. Furthermore, it improves air quality in densely populated areas.
By making this transition, they lead the charge toward greener alternatives. They
set an example for other companies in the industry. This initiative contributes
to a collective effort against climate change. It promotes environmentally friendly
practices across urban centers.

The transition showcases the military’s commitment to innovation and efficiency.
It also highlights a growing trend among businesses. Companies aim to adopt greener
technologies. They respond to regulatory demands. Additionally, they meet consumer
expectations. Businesses strive for environmentally responsible practices. This
shift benefits both the planet and their bottom line. Consumers increasingly demand
sustainability. Therefore, companies must act. They lead by example. The military
sets a standard for innovation. In summary, the movement towards greener technologies
is gaining momentum.

The Marine Corps actively integrates advanced [electric vehicles into its operations](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/04/xos-electric-vehicles-expanding-fedex-partnerships/).
It sets an inspiring example for other military branches and organizations worldwide.
This transition highlights the Marine Corps’ commitment to innovation and sustainability.
It also serves as a catalyst for change within the defense sector. By showcasing
the practical benefits of electric vehicles, such as improved [energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/04/energy-efficient-house-design-tips-for-eco-friendly-living/),
this initiative encourages other military organizations to consider sustainable
alternatives. As various branches observe the successful implementation of these
eco-friendly technologies, they may feel motivated to explore similar paths towards
sustainability. This fosters a global movement towards greener military practices.
