While I was in Detroit for the North American International Auto Show (courtesy of Ford Motor Company just sent me to report, not compensated by them) I couldn’t help but notice the SLS AMG E-CELL.  It’s an all electric super sports car boasting a power output of 525 hp (392 kW) and 649 lb-ft (880 Nm) of torque!  YEAH!! We are talking high-voltage lithium-ion batteries.  We are getting 400 V and 40 Ah with the SLS AMG E-CELL drive.

The electric-drive SLS is part of the “AMG Performance 2015” strategy for the continual reduction of fuel consumption and emissions.

“We take social responsibility very seriously, and with the SLS AMG E-CELL we are presenting a further milestone in our ‘AMG Performance 2015’ strategy. It is our goal over the next few years to continue to reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of new models, while at the same time enhancing the core brand value of performance”, explains Ola Källenius, General Manager of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The ground-breaking drive system in this prototype boasts some outstanding features – powerful traction is provided by four synchronous electric motors with a combined peak output of 525 hp and a maximum torque of 649 lb-ft. The four compact electric motors each achieve a maximum rpm of 12,000/rpm and are positioned close to the wheels, substantially reducing unsprung masses compared with wheel-hub motors.  Power is transmitted via one gearbox per axle.

Acceleration from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds

When it comes to dynamics, the electric-drive SLS AMG makes a powerful statement. It completes the sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds – almost matching the outstanding performance of the 563 hp SLS AMG with the 6.3-liter V8, which reaches the 60 mph mark in 3.7 seconds.

The agile throttle response and linear power delivery make for a breathtaking driving experience. Unlike a combustion engine, torque build-up with an electric motor is instantaneous, with maximum torque available virtually from standstill.

It’s very clear – the SLS AMG E-CELL is a true AMG.

Full-LED headlamps and automatically deploying front splitter

I like the fact that the front end features the dynamic form of the full- LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lights. They help optimize the vehicle’s energy efficiency, as they require less power compared with regular bixenon light systems.
