Go Green, Where Do I Start

It seems everywhere we turn we are hearing the phrase “go green,” and clearly it’s for good reason, since most of us have taken Mother Earth for granted. So it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee, organic coffee that is and make small strides at becoming greener citizens.  I am not saying become the queen of green overnight but there are plenty of things we can be doing to help our planet, so let’s start in a place that I know best – the home! All I can say is Jule Edelman is no accident!! A Housewife but No Accidental Housewife!!

Most people don’t know about this one, but the louder you play your music the more energy you are using. So unless you absolutely need the television and stereo loud enough to annoy the neighbors, turn it down a notch and save a couple of bucks. Having energy efficient appliances is probably the biggest energy saver of them all. When purchasing a new appliance, make sure that it has a good energy rating, most new appliances do. Ovens, air conditioners and heaters are the biggest energy hogs.

Bonus Hint:  Energy Star qualified is a plus!

A perfect example, Energy Star dishwashers are at least 41 percent more efficient than standard new models.  Make sure that all of the walls and windows in your home are sealed. This is just as essential when it comes to your fridge door and the rubber seal on the inside—if it’s cracked it will let cool air escape and your fridge will have to work harder thus using more energy…so seal the deal with Vaseline…it’ll help keep the trim from drying out or cracking AND bonus help deter mold from setting up residence. If you use a computer (which I assume you do since you are reading this J), think about investing in a laptop. Sure they are more expensive than desktops but they also use 10 times less energy than desktops do. Also, they make energy efficient printers and fax machines to if you want to go a step further.

Nearly 900 million people worldwide lack access to safe, clean water (U.S. Fund for UNICEF), something that many people in America take for granted.

This is why it is so important that we conserve water wherever possible.   Here is something to try.  Put a plastic bottle or two, filled with water and rocks, in your toilet tank. This will reduce the amount of water used in each flush.  Don’t use your toilet as a wastebasket by flushing tissues. Eliminating just one flush per day can save nearly 1,300 gallons annually per household, which is enough to wash about 32 loads of laundry.  Make sure to sporadically check your toilet for leaks. A leaky toilet can waste 200 gallons of water every day. To tell if your toilet has a leak, place a drop of food coloring in the tank. If the color shows in the bowl without flushing, you have a leak. Flush quickly after testing to be sure the food coloring doesn’t stain the bowl.  And finally, switch to recycled TP – one roll per household could save 1 million trees.  Most people don’t know this but using the dishwasher actually saves more energy and money than washing dishes by hand.  If you the heat dry cycle off, you’ll save even more power. The additional benefit is that you’ll have cleaner dishes, since hand washed dishes contain more bacteria and never get as clean as dish-washed ones. Plus, you’ll save money on your lower electricity bills.  Some additional tips for saving energy while using the dishwasher include:  wash full loads instead of partial ones, avoid using the temperature boost setting and select no-heat drying, scrape – don’t wash – dishes before loading them, consider using air-dry settings, if available.

Recently on the Today Show, I showed Kathy Lee and Hoda some simple items around the home that are not only eco-friendly but are great household multi-taskers.

Did you know Mayonnaise can polish furniture and remove water ring marks?  That’s right it can also shine tires, plant leaves and remove glue from labels and stickers.  Here are some additional eco-friendly cleaners that I didn’t mention on the show.
