One of my clients, Green Mountain Energy has been doing a lot of great work recently.  Here is one of them.

In honor of Earth Month, Green Mountain is partnering with MillionTreesNYC; employees and volunteers helped plant trees today in Brooklyn.

To celebrate Earth Month, Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation’s spring_planting_press_releaseleading competitive retail provider of cleaner energy, is pledging at least 200 trees in 2011 to Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s MillionTreesNYC program. In addition, today, Green Mountain employees and customer volunteers joined the NYC Parks Department to help plant 10,000 trees at Marine Park in Brooklyn.

Green Mountain is contributing $1 to MillionTreesNYC on behalf of every new Pollution FreeSM electricity customer during 2011 who helps “save trees” by signing up to receive customer communications by email instead of paper.

“Trees are nature’s eco-rock stars.  They provide beauty, a home for wildlife, food, oxygen, and also absorb carbon dioxide pollution. Last year, Green Mountain residential customers in New York using Pollution FreeSM electricity avoided more than 800,000 pounds of CO2 emissions.  That’s as much CO2 as almost 50,000 trees absorb in a year – – twice the number of trees in Central Park,” said John Holtz, director, Eastern U.S. Energy Markets, Green Mountain Energy Company. “So what better way to recognize the environmental impact of Green Mountain customers than by planting trees for MillionTreesNYC?”

Holtz noted that according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one acre of forest absorbs six tons, or about 12,000 pounds, of CO2 emissions.
