Silver Spring Networks, a leading provider of smart grid platforms, today announced
that was named the EMC Data Hero Awards winner in the Energy category.  The Data
Hero Awards 2011, sponsored by EMC Corporation,  honor individuals and organizations
who are exploring innovative uses of Big Data technologies and techniques.   Winners
and finalists were revealed today at EMC World in Las Vegas.
   With the explosion
in data produced by the smart grid, Silver Spring’s _Smart Energy Platform_ provides
the network performance as well as the software solution that enable utilities to
make sense of it all.  The company is using EMC’s analytics technology to help parse
data from millions of smart meters deployed at its utility clients, offering an
integrated view of energy consumption across their service territories and turning
metering data into actionable information.

“Silver Spring Networks is a true Data Hero, epitomizing what it takes to have a
profound impact on the way individuals, organizations, entire industries and societies
live and work,” said Jeremy Burton, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing
Officer, EMC Corporation. “This Data Hero Award underscores Silver Spring Networks’
ability to innovate and turn raw data into insight and a better way.”

Data Hero Awards honorees, comprising the Data Hero Visionary Award and six Data
Hero Awards for Technology Excellence across a range of industry sectors, were selected
by a prestigious independent judge panel, including:

 * Tom Davenport, President’s Distinguished Professor of Information Technology &
Management, Babson College and Co-founder of the International Institute for
   Analytics
 * Kevin Davies, Editor-in-Chief of Bio-IT World and the author of “The $1000 Genome:
The Revolution in DNA Sequencing and the New Era of Personalized Medicine”
 * Edd Dunbill, Program Chair, O’Reilly Media
 * Hadley Reynolds, Research Vice President, Search and Discovery Technologies,
   IDC
 * Dr. Michael Freed, Program Director, AI Center, SRI

According to the EMC-sponsored IDC Digital Universe Study, between 2009 and 2020,
the amount of information created annually will grow 44 times as a result of data-
driven Web 2.0 and mobile applications, databases and records produced by government,
healthcare and retail organizations, as well as individuals. [Big Data](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/09/intersection-of-big-data-and-green-tech/)
opens new windows of opportunity to create and apply technology to analyze quickly
these massive volumes of information to find insights that are driving business
and societal change.
