With a focus on integrated, systems thinking and planning for the future, these courses cover essential strategies and work practices that make buildings green:

The Sustainable City
Explore how the challenges of urban environmetnal management and sustainability to gain an understanding of the many environmental challenges that today’s cities face and explore how those challenges are addressed. With a special focus on New York City topics include: air quality, water, waste management and energy to land use and transportation.

Sustainable Buildings: Design and Construction in the 21st Century
Learn the essential strategies and work practices that make buildings green. Gain an understanding of the impacts buildings have on the natural environment, human health, and the economy, as well as the unique challenges of building sustainable buildings. Learn how to maximize both economic and environmental performance by adopting green building strategies.

CERC Instructors

Howard Apsan is Director of Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management at CUNY—the nation’s largest urban university system. He has taught Sustainability Management at Columbia’s School of International & Public Affairs since 1986. Prior to joining CUNY, he worked in NYC government and served on the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO 14000 and the Environmental Committee of the American Society for Testing Materials.

Patrick Gallagher is Vice President for Estimating at BP Mechanical Corp. He has over 26 years of experience in mechanical contracting and has been with the firm since 1991. With over $80 million in annual sales, BP Mechanical is a leading HVAC contractor in the Tri-state Area. He currently serves as Chairman of the Subcontractors Trade Association’s Green Building Committee and is an instructor for the Urban Council GPRO program.
