Brian Ching Completes Campaign to Build a Green Upgraded Home for a Houston Family

HOUSTON (May 20, 2010) – Last year, Houston Dynamo forward Brian Ching set a goal to raise $75,000. Most noteworthy all in order to build a green-upgraded home. One for a Houston family most importantly in need. All through a partnership with Houston Habitat for Humanity. Moreover with the support of Dynamo Charities, sponsors, and his teammates.

Green Homes for Those In Need

So Brian Ching achieved his goal. Now he also takes part in a formal dedication today at the site of the new home for Theresa Urbano and her two young children.

In addition, this Houston Habitat green-upgraded home. Located in northeast Houston in the Milby Park subdivision, is the result of a partnership that includes: KHOU, BMC Software, Turner Construction, CompuTech, Avalon Wine, MLS W.O.R.K.S, Wasserman Media Group and Dynamo Charities. One of which are friends at Green Mountain Energy that I know care!

Ching’s desire to participate in this project stemmed from a public service announcement he shot for Houston Habitat for Humanity two years ago. Ching was interested in the work Houston Habitat does in the community and was impressed with the effort the organization puts into finding appropriate families for each home. To help raise money for the project, Ching hosted a post-game party following the 2010 MLS All-Star Game. Most importantly all proceeds from the door charge going directly to the build.

The project is a green-upgraded home. A home which will also be the third of its kind built by Houston Habitat. Features of the home include a 10-panel solar system for electricity generation, non-VOC paint, and Forest Stewardship Council-approved recycled cabinetry in both the kitchen and bathrooms. This home also includes a solar-powered hot water heater, provided by Green Mountain Energy Company’s Big Texas Sun grant to Houston Habitat.

In addition to the green aspect of the house, one room of the house will be decorated. Finally to feature the club’s commitment to hometown involvement. The room will feature an orange wall, Dynamo curtains and bedspreads and a Brian Ching poster.

To spruce up New York City with even more greenery this spring, the New York Restoration Project has partnered with leading online charity auction site, charitybuzz.com, for the first annual Earth Day Auction. The Los Angeles City Council approved moving forward with the Los Angeles Green Business Certification Program. The City of Los Angeles’ initiative, to be administered by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), will provide information on how to identify a green business and how businesses can adopt sustainable practices. One of the aims is to enable consumers to support firms that strive to protect the environment. The program was announced at a news conference at Ciudad restaurant. Green Seal, Inc., the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Green Globe and dineLA, a part of LA INC, The Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau will join the LACCD in its work on this effort.
Joe Veilleux doesn’t view himself as an environmentalist, but he understands how his actions might paint him with that brush. “I’m not an environmentalist,” said Veilleux, general manager of the U.S. operations of natural health ingredient manufacturer Euromed. “I’m a pragmatist. There’s a difference. A lot of environmentalists have characterized their cause as one that pits them directly against corporate America. I’m part of corporate America, but I also recognize the debt I owe to the environment and want to do my fair share to protect it. In the long run, it’s just good for business and there are plenty of examples throughout history of how our environment is one of our most valuable natural resources.” Veilleux’s company is partner with the Everglades Foundation in a campaign dubbed Glade-iator (www.glade-iator.org), which is a model of the public-private partnership Veilleux believes is good for business.
