At the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, an electric buggy made history.

orange oil into the rubber, they reduce petroleum use by 20%. This not only lessens

### A Driver’s Determination

Japanese driver Ikuo Hanawa piloted the EV Buggy Sports Concept HER-02 buggy up 
the mountain. The vehicle, powered by a Sanyo battery and an [AC Propulsion](https://greenlivingguy.com/2008/12/ac-propulsion-pioneering-the-electric-vehicle-ac-systems/)
motor. For it also demonstrated that electric vehicles could compete fiercely in
demanding races. Hanawa’s previous attempt had him finish second in his class, narrowly
missing the EV world record by 13 seconds.
