## Oregon Paves the Way for West Coast Green Highway

### Electric Dreams Become Reality

June 2011 – Oregon takes a bold step towards sustainable transportation. The state’s
Department of Transportation selects AeroVironment to build the first phase of the
West Coast Green Highway. This groundbreaking project promises to revolutionize
travel along Interstate 5.

### Oregon Green Highway Charging Ahead: The Infrastructure Challenge

AeroVironment faces a monumental task. The company must install a network of fast-
charging stations along I-5. These stations will allow electric vehicle owners to
travel long distances with confidence.

![The generated image vividly illustrates AeroVironment's vision for Oregon's Green
Highway along Interstate 5. The scene depicts a modern, eco-friendly transformation
of the highway, seamlessly integrating sustainable transportation with Oregon's
natural beauty.
Stretching into the distance, I-5 winds through a lush, green landscape,
with Oregon's iconic mountains rising majestically in the background. This setting
emphasizes the state's commitment to preserving its natural environment while embracing
clean energy technology.
At regular intervals along the highway, sleek and futuristic
electric vehicle charging stations stand out. These stations, prominently displaying
the AeroVironment logo, represent the company's crucial role in building the infrastructure
for this green transportation corridor. The stations' design appears both functional
and aesthetically pleasing, blending harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.

Various models of electric vehicles are shown plugged into these charging stations,
highlighting the project's goal of making long-distance electric vehicle travel
a reality. This diverse array of vehicles suggests that the Green Highway caters
to a wide range of electric vehicle owners, from compact cars to larger sedans.

Hovering above the scene, a large, translucent green leaf serves as a powerful symbol
of the project's environmental focus. This creative element reinforces the eco-friendly
nature of the Green Highway initiative and its potential positive impact on reducing
carbon emissions from transportation.
The image's color palette, dominated by vibrant
greens and blues, further emphasizes the environmental focus of the project. These
colors create a sense of freshness and cleanliness, visually representing the reduced
air pollution that electric vehicles promise.
Overall, this image effectively captures
the essence of AeroVironment's ambitious project to create a Green Highway in Oregon.
It showcases the seamless integration of advanced charging technology with the state's
natural beauty, presenting a compelling vision of a sustainable transportation future.
The image not only illustrates the practical aspects of the project but also conveys
the broader environmental benefits and the transformative potential of this initiative
for Oregon and the entire West Coast.](https://i0.wp.com/greenlivingguy.com/wp-content/

### A Tri-State Vision

Oregon’s initiative forms part of a larger plan. [Washington](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/08/driving-into-the-future-washingtons-electric-charging-stations/)
and California also commit to the West Coast Green Highway project.

Consequently, electric vehicle owners will soon drive from Canada to Mexico without
range anxiety.

## The Technology Behind the Oregon Green Highway

AeroVironment brings cutting-edge technology to the table. Their fast-charging stations
can replenish an electric vehicle’s battery in just 30 minutes. This quick turnaround
time makes electric vehicles a viable option for long-distance travel.

### Economic Impact: More Than Just Green Travel

The project promises to boost Oregon’s economy. It creates jobs in construction
and maintenance. Moreover, it positions the state as a leader in green technology.

### Challenges on the Horizon

Despite the enthusiasm, hurdles remain. The project faces funding constraints and
logistical challenges. However, Oregon’s commitment to the Green Highway remains
unwavering.

## What the Green Living Guy Thinks

This project marks a turning point for electric vehicles in America. By addressing
the crucial issue of long-distance travel, Oregon and its partners are removing
a major barrier to EV adoption. The West Coast Green Highway could serve as a model
for the rest of the country, accelerating our transition to sustainable transportation.

### A Glimpse into the Future

As construction begins, excitement builds among EV enthusiasts and environmentalists
alike. The Green Highway promises to transform Interstate 5 into a showcase of sustainable
technology. It may well become a blueprint for similar projects across the nation.

### The Road Ahead

Oregon’s initiative represents more than just a series of charging stations. It
symbolizes a commitment to a cleaner, greener future. As the West Coast Green Highway
takes shape, it paves the way for a new era of sustainable transportation in America.

Fast charging stations along high-traffic transportation corridors will help make
driving electric vehicles between communities a viable option for Oregonians" said
Art James, project director with the Oregon Department of Transportation. "The state
of Oregon is committed to providing EV drivers with practical, safe and reliable
EV recharging infrastructure, which is why we selected AeroVironment as one of our
partners. AeroVironment secured this contract for the southern leg of the 'EV Green
Highway' project by demonstrating its support, customer service, and price and value."
AeroVironment's Level 3 fast charging stations deliver high-power, DC charging for
EV drivers with very little time to spare, mirroring the way drivers currently use
gasoline stations. The fast charging stations are CHAdeMO compliant, meaning that
they are compatible with fast-charge capable EV models such as the Nissan LEAF.
The company's proprietary charging system is based on proven technology that has
made AeroVironment a leading provider of heavy-duty EV fast chargers, supporting
some of the most demanding supply chains in the world. "Oregon is demonstrating
tremendous leadership in advancing the 'Green Highway' "said Mike Bissonette, senior
vice president and general manager of Efficient Energy Systems for AeroVironment.“
We look forward to working with ODOT and other stakeholders in the state to design
the optimal corridor to support local and long-distance travelers.” AeroVironment
will analyze driving distances, common destinations, vehicle range and other factors
in its selection of the EV fast charging sites at eight interchanges identified
by ODOT along a 150-mile segment of the I-5 in Southern Oregon. The company is also
experienced in working with utilities and will collaborate with local utilities
to prepare for the deployment. The company anticipates installing the fast charging
stations along Oregon's 'Green Highway' by the end of this fall. The project is
funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) awarded through the
State Energy Program (SEP). The U.S. Department of Energy administers the funds,
approves the projects and reviews the state’s progress. In addition to 480-volt
fast charging stations AeroVironment also provides J-1772 compliant 240-volt Level
2 charging stations, installation and support services and data communications network
services. More than 2,000 AeroVironment Level 2 charging stations have been installed
in 21 U.S. states since late 2010. http://www.avinc.com/resources/press_release/
