## Canada Announces Start Date for Biodiesel Requirement

Canada’s environment minister, Peter Kent, announced that the country will require
a 2% biodiesel [blend](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/12/u-s-biofuel-camelina-production-set-to-soar/)
in diesel fuel and home heating oil starting July 1, 2011. The program will reduce
[greenhouse gas emissions](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/09/harm-seen-to-environment-and-small-businesses-through-increased-risk-of-oil-spills-significant-greenhouse-gas-emissions/)
by 1.3 million tons each year. All which is equivalent to removing 280,000 cars
off the road. The requirement will also create [jobs](https://natural-resources.canada.ca/energy-efficiency/transportation-alternative-fuels/alternative-fuels/biofuels/biodiesel/3509)
in the biodiesel industry. Moreover it will provide farmers with new sources of
revenues.

### Benefits of Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a [renewable](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/05/earth-day-network-ups-launch-biodiesel-plant/)
fuel that can be produced from a [variety of sources](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/05/biogenset-event-june-9th-nyc/).
For that’s including soybean oil, canola oil, and animal fats. I mean amongst others.
In addition, biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions, particulate matter. As
well as other harmful pollutants. Most noteworthy, biodiesel blends can be used
in diesel engines. All without any modifications. For it can replace traditional
diesel fuel in many applications. So I mean including transportation, home heating,
and power generation.

from La Jolla. La Jolla is biotech mecca…The 92121 zip code, just North of San Diego,
has the most biotech companies, 2.8x that of second place (South San Francisco).

#### Biodiesel Production in Canada

Canada has a growing biodiesel industry. That’s with several plants already in operation.
I mean and more under construction. The country has the potential to produce large
quantities of biodiesel from canola oil. All which is one of the most common crops
in the country.

For the new biodiesel requirement will help to stimulate the development of the
biodiesel industry. Especially in Canada and provide a new market for canola farmers.

#### Conclusion

Canada’s new biodiesel requirement is a positive step. Especially towards reducing
greenhouse gas emissions and promoting the use of renewable fuels. The requirement
will provide significant environmental benefits. All the while also creating jobs
and [new revenue streams](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/05/environment-canada-charges-teck-metals-over-spills/)
for farmers. As the world faces increasing environmental challenges. So it is important
for countries to prioritize sustainability and work towards a more sustainable future.
Canada’s biodiesel requirement is a positive example of how governments can take
action to address these challenges.
