Representatives of 10 businesses committed to sustainability initiatives gathered at a reception in Central Florida to celebrate the launch of the Southeast Regional Office of the U.S. Green Chamber.

The event introduced business owners and company representatives unfamiliar with the Green Chamber to some of the highly successful sustainability practices of several major national companies.

The profit potential of sustainable business practices were shared by corporate representatives from Lockheed Martin, Darden Restaurants, AAA, and others during the reception. Each representative shared his or her own company’s story and how green initiatives have improved their company’s bottom line.

“These national companies are at the forefront of a major paradigm shift that is reshaping how American does business,” says Michelle Thatcher, national director and co-founder of the U.S. Green Chamber. “Successful corporations like these routinely save millions of dollars by using smart conservation practices.”

Corporate leaders at Wal-Mart found that a 5 percent reduction in excess packaging by 2013 would save $11 billion, according to a report in The Economist. The in-depth report explained that, “For more than a decade, US firms like DuPont, 3M, and SC Johnson have been showing the way, using ‘corporate citizenship’ as a source of competitive savings.”

The U.S. Green Chamber of Commerce is a national nonprofit organization, empowering businesses to achieve economic, environmental and social sustainability. Members benefit from increased organizational visibility, educational tools to improve operational performance, and extensive networking opportunities. The Southeast Regional Office of the U.S. Green Chamber of Commerce will serve businesses based in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia and Louisiana.

“We are very excited to be playing a pivotal role in the economic development of local and regional markets that consider the broader, real world economy of efficiency and profitability,” says Jennifer Barrows, executive director of the Southeast region.
