60MPG — a joint effort of Environment America, the National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council, the Safe Climate Campaign, the Sierra Club, and the Union of Concerned Scientists – issued the following statement today:
“Chairman Issa’s hearing only continues his streak of trying to find controversy where none exists. Automakers, labor groups, national security experts, consumer and environmental advocates, and representatives of his own state all played a role in informing the framework for these historic standards and stood in support with the president when he announced the framework in July.
The rulemaking process has been and will continue to be an open one as the standards are officially proposed, reviewed by the public, adjusted and finalized.
The proposed standards would save drivers in Rep. Issa’s own state of California nearly $5 billion per year while cleaning up our air and curbing our dependence on oil. They would also create close to 500,000 new jobs across the country, including 60,000 in California. Rep. Issa is wasting Congress’ time and jeopardizing real savings at the gas pump for his constituents and much needed reductions in greenhouse gas pollution.”
