EPA, DOE to Study Potential for Renewable Energy Possibilities on Milwaukee & St. Paul Rail Yard Company Brownfields Site in Perry, Iowa

EPA and the Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory are collaborating on a project to evaluate the feasibility of siting renewable energy production on the Milwaukee & St. Paul Rail Yard Company Brownfields Site, owned by the City of Perry, Iowa.  The study, valued up to $35,000, will explore the potential for solar or wind power generation on the site.

The vacant 138-acre site has been closed and underused since 1986. In 2004 the city acquired the land and secured an EPA Brownfields grant to assess and clean up the site. Cleanup work under the Iowa Land Recycling Program was completed in the summer of 2011, and the city continues to work diligently to eliminate contamination concerns associated with the site.

The City of Perry will use the feasibility study as a tool to help develop the type of facility best suited for its future energy needs. The best fit for the former rail yard is likely to solar or wind power technologies.

“Renewable energy is a vital part of America’s energy future. By using wind, solar, geothermal, and other renewable energy sources, we reduce our dependence on fossil fuels while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions from other sources of energy production,” said EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks.

The Los Angeles City Council approved moving forward with the Los Angeles Green Business Certification Program. The City of Los Angeles’ initiative, to be administered by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), will provide information on how to identify a green business and how businesses can adopt sustainable practices. One of the aims is to enable consumers to support firms that strive to protect the environment. The program was announced at a news conference at Ciudad restaurant. Green Seal, Inc., the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Green Globe and dineLA, a part of LA INC, The Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau will join the LACCD in its work on this effort.
Joe Veilleux doesn’t view himself as an environmentalist, but he understands how his actions might paint him with that brush. “I’m not an environmentalist,” said Veilleux, general manager of the U.S. operations of natural health ingredient manufacturer Euromed. “I’m a pragmatist. There’s a difference. A lot of environmentalists have characterized their cause as one that pits them directly against corporate America. I’m part of corporate America, but I also recognize the debt I owe to the environment and want to do my fair share to protect it. In the long run, it’s just good for business and there are plenty of examples throughout history of how our environment is one of our most valuable natural resources.” Veilleux’s company is partner with the Everglades Foundation in a campaign dubbed Glade-iator (www.glade-iator.org), which is a model of the public-private partnership Veilleux believes is good for business.
