## Aveda Environmental Awards Pioneer

The awards from Aveda, a pioneer in corporate environmental sustainability and responsibility,
recognize environmental leadership and achievement across various sectors. There
is a particular emphasis on the magazine industry. These prestigious accolades are
not only a celebration of individual companies and their efforts. They also serve
as a benchmark for best practices in environmental stewardship. Aveda highlights
how these achievements are accomplished through the adoption of environmentally
responsible paper sourcing and innovative production practices. These practices
reduce waste and energy consumption. By encouraging the use of recycled materials
and promoting sustainable forestry initiatives, Aveda aims to inspire other businesses
to follow suit. Ultimately, this creates a ripple effect that contributes significantly
to the preservation of our planet’s resources for future generations.

Dirt Rag Publisher, Maurice Tierney, said: “Because our staff and readers are avid
mountain bikers and spend a lot of time outdoors, we treasure the environment. We
do what we can to minimize our footprint. As a natural extension of this, the staff
is proud to use 90 percent recycled, Forest Stewardship Council Certified and Process
Chlorine Free paper in Dirt Rag.” Tierney added, “It’s as simple as walking the
walk.”

Julie Koppen, publisher of Greenability, commented: “Greenability’s mission is to
showcase the efforts Kansas City is making to be a more sustainable metropolitan
area. We hope to be an example by upholding the highest standards for a printed
magazine. So, our use of recycled and Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper
is one example of how we can reduce our own use of natural resources.”

### GRIT Publisher on Aveda Environmental Awards Impact

GRIT Publisher and Editorial Director, Bryan Welch, stated, “We take considerable
pride in using recycled-content paper to significantly lessen GRIT magazine’s environmental
impact. Furthermore, this decision goes hand-in-hand with our long history—dating
back to the late 1800s—of being good stewards of the land. Consequently, we hope
that this will lead to greater environmental practices by others in the magazine
industry, too!”

Green America’s Better Paper Project Director Frank Locantore stated, “Despite the
rise of the digital age, interestingly, the world is, in fact, using more paper
than ever before. Furthermore, Dirt Rag, Greenability, and GRIT are not just Aveda
Environmental Awards shining examples. They also illustrate how we can make print
not only more sustainable but also much more appealing. Indeed, they truly stand
out in the magazine industry, where, unfortunately, only about 2% of U.S. publications
regularly utilize recycled paper.”

“True to our mission to care for the world we live in, Aveda encourages all the
publishers we advertise with to adopt environmentally responsible paper and production
practices,” said Rachael Ostrom, executive director of consumer engagement for Aveda.“
We have been delighted to work with Green America to promote sustainable publishing
by sponsoring the Aveda Environmental Award since 2005.”

### How Much Do they Save?

How much is at stake for the Aveda Environmental Awards if magazines get greener?
The entire North American magazine industry can include a minimum of 30 percent
post-consumer recycled paper in their publications. It would save approximately:

m

 1. 1.5 million tons of wood, or the equivalent of 10 million trees. This represents
a significant depletion of our forests. Certainly highlighting the urgent need
for sustainable practices in [timber harvesting](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/12/timber-harvesting-methods-and-what-happens/)
    and forest management.
 2. 6.6 million BTU’s of energy, or the equivalent of heating 73 thousand homes. Underscoring
the vast energy demands of modern living and emphasizes our reliance on fossil
fuels. It’s calling for innovations in renewable energy sources
 3. 1.8 billion pounds of CO2 emissions, or the equivalent of taking 160 thousand cars
off the road. That really serves as a stark reminder of our carbon footprint. As
well as the pressing necessity to transition to cleaner transportation options
    to combat climate change
 4. 7 billion gallons of wastewater, or the equivalent of 5 thousand swimming pools.
For this definitely raises critical concerns about water conservation and pollution.
It’s also prompting discussions on more efficient water usage and treatment solutions
    in urban planning
 5. And 780 million pounds of solid waste, or the equivalent to 28 thousand garbage
trucks. This clearly illustrates the growing problem of waste management in our
society. It’s also urging us to adopt better recycling practices and reduce unnecessary
consumption to protect our environment for future generations.
