Ever wonder how much energy is wasted by that blinking light or clock on your microwave?

Turns out, a lot more than you might think.

As NRDC energy efficiency advocate Meg Waltner notes in her new blog, microwaves – along with other household electronics that have standby features – are energy “vampires” that cost the typical American household about $100 a year.

But new standards proposed by the Department of Energy, could save consumers — between $1.8 billion and $3.6 billion on our power bills over 30 years – by cutting the stand-by power used by microwaves.

This would not only save consumers money, but also would help cut harmful air pollution by reducing electricity demand at power plants.

For more details on the proposed DOE standards, see Meg’s blog here.
