Ever wonder how much energy is wasted by that blinking light or clock on your microwave?

Turns out, a lot more than you might think.

**As NRDC energy efficiency advocate Meg Waltner notes in her new blog, microwaves–
along with other household electronics that have standby features – are energy “
vampires” that cost the typical American household about $100 a year.**

**But new standards proposed by **the Department of Energy, could save consumers—
between $1.8 billion and $3.6 billion on our power bills over 30 years – by cutting
the stand-by power used by microwaves.

This would **not only save consumers money, but also would help cut harmful air
pollution by reducing electricity demand at power plants.**

**For more details on the proposed DOE standards, **see Meg’s blog here**.**
