To save energy and “green” affordable housing citywide.Enterprise Community Partners (Enterprise) and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) are announcing the completed retrofit of 2,200 apartments in New York City with an expected 24 % energy and 23% carbon emission reduction. They were selected by the state to weatherize 95 multifamily buildings throughout the city, and in addition to energy savings, they created 200 temporary construction jobs and trained workers in green building maintenance.

Talk about going green to save energy and “green” for affordable housing NYC citywide.

Critical to the program’s success was active resident engagement; a focus on portfolios instead of individual buildings; and post-construction monitoring to make sure that the intended savings will be realized.

New York State’s Weatherization Assistance Program with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is the largest residential energy conservation program in the country and receives funding from the U.S. Departments of Energy and Health and Human Services.

In 2010 (the year Enterprise and LISC were selected to participate), New York State received $394.6 million in additional funding for the program through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA).

Enterprise and LISC’s work demonstrates that weatherization can be effective with the right partners and tools in place.
