One clever, creative idea can make the difference

“Because of climate change, we face the challenge of embracing a new green lifestyle,” says Marieke van Schaik, Managing Director of the Dutch Postcode Lottery. “One clever, creative idea can make a huge difference. That’s why we’re calling on people all over the world to send in their green business plans. With the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge, we seek to make sure groundbreaking sustainable solutions actually get developed and reach the market. The winning product or service will reduce CO2 emissions and score highly on design, user-friendliness and overall quality. And the plan has to be realisable within two years.”

Selection procedure

Each entrant will be asked to submit a detailed business plan, so an expert preliminary jury can determine whether his or her idea is viable. After 31 July, the preliminary jury will choose between five and eight finalists.

The finalists will present their plans before an international jury of experts and an audience of invited guests on Monday 17 September in Amsterdam at the multimedia conference PICNIC ’12.

For the first time in the history of the competition, three finalists will go on to New York after the presentations and individual interviews with the jury. There, the expert jury will announce the winner’s name at a special dinner organised by the Postcode Lottery in partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative. Leaders around the world come together at Bill Clinton’s annual meeting to discuss how to tackle global problems such as climate change.

Previous winners enjoy success
The Australian Nick Christy won last year’s Green Challenge for his Water Recycling Shower, which reduces water and energy use by 70 per cent without compromising on comfort. In 2010, the American Scot Frank won for his portable, affordable multipurpose solar collector SolSource. The 2009 prize went to Britain’s Dean Gregory for The Power Collective, a producer of nearly invisible rooftop wind turbines. In 2008, the American Eben Bayer won for his natural insulation material Greensulate. And the first Green Challenge prize, in 2007, went to the Dutchman Igor Kluin for the Qbox, a unit enabling decentralised electricity generation.
Quotes by supporters of the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge
Bill Clinton: “I’m pleased that the Dutch Postcode Lottery has launched the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge to encourage entrepreneurs to develop new ways to fight one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change.”

Sir Richard Branson (juror for the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge 2007): “People aren’t going to stop consuming. Instead, we must offer the consumer a green alternative to bring climate change to a halt. The Postcode Lottery Green Challenge is about stimulating the development of these alternatives.”

Nick Christy (winner of the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge 2011): “Thanks to the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge, we’re well on the way to developing the world’s most efficient shower. Showers are the second biggest consumer of energy in a house and the largest consumer of drinking water – we can reduce both by 70 per cent and make a real difference to global CO2 emissions and water consumption. Taking part in the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge was one of the best things I’ve ever done – life-changing, eye-opening and amazing fun with some of the nicest people you could hope to meet.”

Society always wins: The Dutch Postcode Lottery

The Dutch Postcode Lottery was founded in 1989 to support charitable causes. Today, 2.5 million people in the Netherlands play the lottery each year. Each month, they vie for an average 500,000 prizes. At the same time, they’re supporting good causes, since half the ticket price goes to 85 charitable organisations.

Since its founding, the Postcode Lottery has donated more than €3.5 billion to charities helping people and nature. UNICEF, WWF, Amnesty International, Natuurmonumenten, Doctors Without Borders and many other organisations receive its support each year.
Since 2005, the Postcode Lottery has also been active in the United Kingdom and Sweden, where the People’s Postcode Lottery and the Svenska PostkodLotteriet respectively raise funds for good causes. In the Netherlands, the Dutch Postcode Lottery works with the BankGiro Loterij and VriendenLoterij as the Goede Doelen Loterijen. Novamedia/Postcode Loterijen is the world’s third-largest private charitable donor.
