First Solar Extends and Expands Collaboration and Licensing Agreement With Intermolecular

SAN JOSE, Calif. and TEMPE, Ariz., Jan. 7, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Intermolecular, Inc. (Nasdaq:IMI) and First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq:FSLR) today announced they have entered into a two-year collaboration and licensing agreement focused on further increases to the conversion efficiency of First Solar’s cadmium telluride (CdTe) solar cell technology. Under the new collaborative development program, First Solar and Intermolecular researchers will work together to develop disruptive new approaches to increasing the performance of CdTe solar cell technology using Intermolecular’s proprietary High Productivity Combinatorial (HPC™) platform. The program targets substantial gains in First Solar’s module conversion efficiency beyond its previously announced roadmap.

The Los Angeles City Council approved moving forward with the Los Angeles Green Business Certification Program. The City of Los Angeles’ initiative, to be administered by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), will provide information on how to identify a green business and how businesses can adopt sustainable practices. One of the aims is to enable consumers to support firms that strive to protect the environment. The program was announced at a news conference at Ciudad restaurant. Green Seal, Inc., the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Green Globe and dineLA, a part of LA INC, The Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau will join the LACCD in its work on this effort.
Joe Veilleux doesn’t view himself as an environmentalist, but he understands how his actions might paint him with that brush. “I’m not an environmentalist,” said Veilleux, general manager of the U.S. operations of natural health ingredient manufacturer Euromed. “I’m a pragmatist. There’s a difference. A lot of environmentalists have characterized their cause as one that pits them directly against corporate America. I’m part of corporate America, but I also recognize the debt I owe to the environment and want to do my fair share to protect it. In the long run, it’s just good for business and there are plenty of examples throughout history of how our environment is one of our most valuable natural resources.” Veilleux’s company is partner with the Everglades Foundation in a campaign dubbed Glade-iator (www.glade-iator.org), which is a model of the public-private partnership Veilleux believes is good for business.
