## Formula E Drivers’ Race Club Adds Trulli, Bird, Heidfeld and d’Ambrosio

Formula E race club just added serious racing credibility in March 2014. Especially
when you add Jarno Trulli, Sam Bird, Nick Heidfeld and Jérôme d’Ambrosio joined
the Formula E Drivers’ Club. Their participation also showed how quickly professional
motorsport was beginning to take electric racing seriously.

The FIA Formula E Championship created the Drivers’ Club in January 2014. The program
brought together experienced international racers who supported the new electric
championship and expressed interest in competing.

### Jarno Trulli Brings Formula One Experience

Jarno Trulli arrived with one of the strongest Formula One résumés in the group.
The Italian driver competed in more than 250 Grands Prix during a career that included
Minardi, Prost, Jordan, Renault, Toyota and Lotus.

Most notably, Trulli won the 2004 Monaco Grand Prix for Renault. His combination
of speed, qualifying skill and Formula One experience gave the new electric series
added credibility.

### Sam Bird Represents a New Generation for the Formula E Drivers Race Club

Meanwhile, British racer Sam Bird brought a different kind of experience.

Bird had competed successfully in GP2 and Formula Renault 3.5. In addition, he had
tested Formula One machinery for Williams and Mercedes. He narrowly missed the GP2
championship before joining the Formula E Drivers’ Club.

Bird also recognized the larger role electric vehicles could play beyond racing.
Formula E offered manufacturers and engineers an opportunity to develop electric
technology while also giving fans a new form of motorsport.

### Nick Heidfeld Adds More F1 Experience to the Formula E Drivers Race Club

Nick Heidfeld added another established Formula One name.

The German driver competed for Prost, Sauber, Williams, BMW Sauber and Lotus-Renault.
He also earned 13 Formula One podium finishes before expanding his racing career
into endurance competition.

For Heidfeld, Formula E combined serious competition with street circuits in major
cities around the world. That urban racing format would eventually become one of
the championship’s defining characteristics.

One career that included multiple podium finishes.

### Jérôme d’Ambrosio Joins the Electric Racing Movement

Jérôme d’Ambrosio also brought Formula One and GP2 experience.

The Belgian racer competed in Formula Renault 3.5 and GP2 before entering Formula
One with Marussia in 2011. Later, he became a Lotus reserve driver and raced for
the team at the 2012 Italian Grand Prix.

D’Ambrosio described Formula E as part of the future of motorsport. He also emphasized
the championship’s ability to combine exciting racing with a more sustainable approach.

### Formula E Was Building Momentum

At the time, joining the Drivers’ Club did not automatically guarantee a race seat.
Individual teams still controlled their driver selections.

However, the growing list of established drivers showed that Formula E was gaining
momentum before its first season even started. Audi Sport ABT had already confirmed
Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt for its inaugural lineup.

The story became even more significant in hindsight. Bird, Trulli, Heidfeld and
d’Ambrosio all eventually competed during Formula E’s inaugural 2014–15 season.

### Conclusion

Formula E started with a bold idea: combine electric vehicle innovation with international
motorsport.

Adding Jarno Trulli, Sam Bird, Nick Heidfeld and Jérôme d’Ambrosio helped turn that
idea into something much more credible. These drivers brought Formula One, GP2 and
endurance-racing experience into a championship built around electric propulsion.

More importantly, Formula E created a proving ground for EV technology while showing
that sustainability and competitive racing could coexist.

More than a decade later, that early Drivers’ Club looks like an important moment
in the transformation of electric motorsport.
