## Rooting for the Planet: Arbor Day’s Green Legacy

### Trees Take Center Stage

Arbor Day stands tall as one of the oldest environmental celebrations. It champions
the power of trees in our ecosystem. Most places mark this day on April’s last Friday,
uniting global efforts to green our world.

### A Seed of an Idea Sprouts

The story of Arbor Day begins in a small Spanish village. In 1802, a visionary priest
in Villanueva de la Sierra organized a tree planting. This simple act beautified
the village and planted the seeds of a global movement.

#### America Branches Out

J Sterling Morton, a Nebraska politician and magazine editor, brought Arbor Day
to American soil in 1872. He rallied Nebraskans to an ambitious goal. They planted
over one million trees across the state. This feat amazed many, given Nebraska’s
population of only 120,000 at the time.

### From Saplings to Forests

Arbor Day has grown into a nationwide movement. It now encompasses a wide range
of planting events. These range from community efforts to large-scale reforestation
projects in national parks. The Arbor Day Foundation leads these green initiatives
in the U.S.

#### Campuses Go Green

In 2008, the Foundation launched Tree Campus USA. This program recognizes colleges
and universities for exemplary tree care practices. It encourages educational institutions
to root their commitment to the environment.

### Branching Out: How to Celebrate

Arbor Day thrives on grassroots participation. The Arbor Day Foundation welcomes
volunteers for various projects. These include revitalizing the Lost Pines Forest
in Texas and replanting in tornado-struck Joplin, Missouri.

### Plant Your Own Legacy

You can celebrate Arbor Day in your own backyard. Planting a tree offers numerous
benefits. It improves air quality, provides shade, and creates habitats for wildlife.
Your single act can grow into a lasting environmental impact.
