I sampled the product. Good coffee. Yet I don’t drink coffee anymore thanks to Dr Ginger. Anyway, onto the main part of the story that this coffee pod has plastic seals made from layered plastic and can be reclaimed under recycling code #7. The filter itself is composed of 100% polypropylene, which makes it recyclable with other #5 plastics.

Historical Context
By some counts, 15% to 25% of U.S. households now own a single-serve coffee machine. That roughly translates into 9 billion of those cups ending up in landfills every year (The Wall Street Journal).

Designed with the environment in mind, Melitta Coffee recently launched its own line of eco-friendly and 100% recyclable single-serve cups for Keurig-style machines* – Melitta’s Café de Europa Gourmet Coffee. Unique to the category, consumers can actually see and smell their coffee from the moment they remove the cup from its individually sealed freshness pack. With this new single-serve option, coffee enthusiasts no longer have to choose between quality and convenience. Each cup is made with a filter, and upon brewing, water fully saturates the grinds for a bold, flavorful cup of coffee. Melitta’s new single cups are available at http://www.melitta.com, http://www.amazon.com and most major grocery retailers in the metro areas of Boston, New York City and Philadelphia, for $9.49 (12 count box).

Additionally, the brand offers several other eco-friendly options for use in most Keurig-style brewers*:

The Melitta JavaJig features 2 reusable capsules, with 30 paper filters. Simply choose a favorite coffee or tea and adjust fill levels to taste. Once done brewing, simply remove and dispose of the paper filter, rinse and reuse. MSRP: $8.99; available at most major retailers and online at Melitta.com and Amazon.com.

The Melitta E-Filter features 5 reusable filters, each designed to last up to 20 uses per filter. Simply choose a favorite coffee or tea and adjust fill levels to taste. Once done brewing, simply remove, rinse and reuse. MSRP: $8.99; available at most major retailers and online at Melitta.com and Amazon.com.
