## Cutting America’s Coastal WETLAND Foundation Cites Danger in Restoration Budget Cuts

New Orleans, La. – Citing evidence that a vast majority of citizens call cutting
coastal wetlands restoration of erosion is the issue of a lifetime. For the America’s
WETLAND Foundation (AWF) today called on the State of Louisiana to rescind any actions.
Those that would halt momentum for coastal [restoration along its fast deteriorating coast](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/04/bp-commits-to-early-restoration-projects-along-gulf-coast/).

“In such dire budget situations, across the board cuts may be politically plausible.
But the case we make for saving our coast has been one of utmost urgency. We cannot
afford to send a contradictory signal to those who are deciding on billions of dollars
in restoration funding and [attention](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/07/progress-on-commercial-building-energy-efficiency-has-been-good-but-more-attention-needed-to-decrease-waste-in-several-areas/)
to our most critical needs,” Val f, managing director of the AWF, said.

### Foundation Survey

The survey cited by the Foundation is from a recent poll of Louisiana voters. It
highlights the critical state of environmental concerns among its residents. In
this poll, an impressive 74% representing both political parties assert that “saving
Louisiana’s coast is the most important issue of my lifetime.” This consensus reflects
a deep-rooted awareness of the challenges facing the state, particularly the rapid
coastal land loss.

The poll also found overwhelming concern that the issue of coastal land loss is
not merely an environmental problem. It is intricately tied to a strong economy
and the protection of local communities. Residents recognize that maintaining the
coast is vital for preserving their livelihoods, tourism, and the fishing industry.
These are all crucial to Louisiana’s economic health.

In addition, the erosion of the coastline poses threats to homes and infrastructure,
emphasizing the urgency for sustained action and policies that address these pressing
issues effectively.

## Restore the Coast

> _“For more than decade we have sent the message to Washington that the state will
> stand firm in doing its part to restore the coast, the loss of which both impacts
> our citizens in very real ways and has negative consequences for the U.S. economy,
> its energy and navigation sectors and one of the most important estuaries on the
> planet,” Sidney Coffee, senior advisor to AWF and former chair of the Louisiana
> Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, said. Now to send any contrary message

> supporters in the non-profit sector could serve to chill the strong support we
> have gained to fund and restore the coast._

News about plans to cut funding were just [announced by the Jindal Administration](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/02/biden-administration-announces-billions-in-nationwide-electric-vehicle-network-investment/),
stating coastal funding could be cut by more than $6 million dollars. This alarming
proposal has raised concerns among environmental advocates. They argue that such
drastic reductions could severely impact coastal communities and their ability to
respond to climate change challenges. Cutting funding at this level not only jeopardizes
vital restoration projects. It also undermines efforts to protect fragile ecosystems
that serve as habitats for numerous species. Local leaders are now calling for increased
dialogue with the administration to find alternative solutions. These should prioritize
the well-being of both the environment and the economy. As the stakes are higher
than ever for coastal regions vulnerable to rising sea levels and extreme weather
events.

### Losing a Football Field a Day

As told, we are losing a football field of land to coastal erosion daily. That’s
as we argue to continue to suffer. Essentially the greatest land loss on the [planet](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/11/why-keeping-your-surrounding-wild-is-essential-for-maintaining-a-healthy-ecosystem-for-all/).
Many worthy, necessary programs and [projects will fall in the budget cutting](https://greenlivingguy.com/2012/12/ge-lighting-hotel-project-cuts-costs-significantly/)
process. However, we call upon the legislature, the Administration, and thoughtful
citizens everywhere to avoid doing anything that will slow the wheels of restoration
progress. No single issue more negatively impacts the future economy of our [state than coastal land](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/03/state-land-trusts-urge-courts-to-deny-penneast-pipeline-eminent-domain-overreach-says-nj-conservation/)
loss and our failure to reverse it.”
