# Upsetting News VW and Audi Rigged Diesel Cars to Act Green

Sad to report that cars I also tested from [Volkswagen](http://www.vw.com) and Audi.
Yes those sold in the US. For they were definitely rigging their TDI to be green.
I knew and reported on [Answers.com](http://answers.com) they were not green. Those
reviews were then also taken down.

This accounts for most importantly about 482,000 diesel vehicles that had “illegal
emissions control software”. All to have their cars act cleaner. All in testing 
than they are in the real world.

For the EPA announced.

#### **According to EPA****:**

The software, included on VW and [Audi](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/01/bmw-vw-and-chargepoint-go-fast-charging-network-across-usa/)
vehicles from the 2009-15 model years with 2.0-liter turbodiesel engines. For it
detects when a car is undergoing EPA emissions testing. Then it turns on the vehicle’s
full emissions controls. The software then switched off the full emissions controls
during real-world driving. That’s what the EPA also said in a statement.

So the EPA calls the software a “defeat device”. One that allowed VW and Audi vehicles
to fulfill [emissions](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/09/suspending-vehicles-volkswagen-diesel-green/)
standards in lab testing yet emit nitrogen oxides at up to 40 times allowable levels.
That’s in real-world driving.

The claims were also outlined in a letter and notice sent by EPA officials to VW
executives and the other car manufacturers associated with VW AG.

#### A Rig Job

Estimates of the initial fine could reach $18 Billion yet we know that the total
paid put will be less. More importantly they will have to recall these cars to fix
the problem. Let’s hope VW and Audi don’t rig the fix!

After their CEO admitted to using software to cheat emissions tests.

Jetta (2009 – 2014)

 1. Beetle (2009 – 2014), Golf (2009 – 2014)
 2. Passat ( 2014 and 2015)
 3. Audi A3 (2009 – 2015)

For they are all equipped with the software and being recalled according to the 
EPA.

picture) have been driving off the assembly lines in Foshan since 2014.
