Engineering the 2016 Rio Olympics

The 2016 Rio Summer Olympics have been particularly controversial as the city has been riddled with environmental and health issues, including pollution, an extreme drought, and Zika outbreaks. In fact, an estimated 1.5 million people were infected with the Zika virus in Brazil in 2015 with Rio de Janeiro’s outbreaks being the highest of any city in Brazil. Furthermore, Brazil is facing the worst drought in 40 years.

Despite these roadblocks, there have also been incredible engineering developments and achievements which are expected to have a lasting impact on the city’s infrastructure and economy.
