Iconic bridge shines with environmental lighting installation

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — I mean let’s hear it for Pittsburgh’s forward-thinking commitment to innovation and sustainability. Those will be reflected in a new addition. All to the city’s Comcast Light Up Night® launch of the holiday season.

With Downtown, the North Shore and the South Side aglow in lights and festivities.  That’s drawing an anticipated crowd of 500,000. All a new 27,000 multi-colored LED lighting display. Located on the Rachel Carson Bridge. It is also known as the 9th Street Bridge.

One that will beautify the night-time skyline. All with the help of environmentally friendly wind power.

Energy Flow

Titled “Energy Flow,” the installation was designed by environmental artist Andrea Polli. One who envisioned Pittsburgh’s sister bridges. All illuminated with most importantly wind power.

In addition, Ron Gdovic, CEO WindStax Wind Power Systems helped. He helped bring Polli’s vision to life. That’s most interestingly by developing nanogrids. Also he built 16. That’s specially designed wind turbines. Those mounted on steel platforms. Also secured to the bridge. In addition, the wind turbines generate the main source of power. All for lighting the display.


More than an art display. For the Energy Flow installation bridges are holidays. All so Pittsburgh’s pioneering industrial past with its technology-driven future. That’s making it a perfect endnote. All to Pittsburgh’s bicentennial celebration.

Rachel Carson Bridge

“It is fitting that this sustainable installation is mounted to the Rachel Carson Bridge. One also named for the noted environmental champion. Also and a Pittsburgh-area native.”  That was said Mayor William Peduto, City of Pittsburgh.

The Rachel Carson Bridge is one of Pittsburgh’s Three Sisters. Also three prominent and nearly identical. It’s self-anchored suspension bridges. Those spanning the Allegheny River. Also and the first of their kind in the United States.

The installation has been more than a year in the making. The project was realized through the efforts of Mayor Peduto. In addition to Covestro LLC and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, Riverlife. Also the City of Pittsburgh and Duquesne Light Company. Finally and DQE Communications.

The Pittsburgh media and downtown commuters were given a sneak preview. That’s of the lighting installation tonight.

In addition, all regional residents and visitors are for a treat. Because the city will be able to enjoy the Energy Flow display. That’s throughout the holiday season. Finally and on select occasions in early 2017.

I mean this is a really great first start. Look, I mean instead of lighting the holidays with incandescent bulbs. So they went LED; which I think is awesome.

So it clearly saved them money. I mean a lot of money.  That display times the amount of energy equals a lot of money. I mean for taxpayers. Well, not anymore.

To spruce up New York City with even more greenery this spring, the New York Restoration Project has partnered with leading online charity auction site, charitybuzz.com, for the first annual Earth Day Auction. The Los Angeles City Council approved moving forward with the Los Angeles Green Business Certification Program. The City of Los Angeles’ initiative, to be administered by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), will provide information on how to identify a green business and how businesses can adopt sustainable practices. One of the aims is to enable consumers to support firms that strive to protect the environment. The program was announced at a news conference at Ciudad restaurant. Green Seal, Inc., the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Green Globe and dineLA, a part of LA INC, The Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau will join the LACCD in its work on this effort.
Joe Veilleux doesn’t view himself as an environmentalist, but he understands how his actions might paint him with that brush. “I’m not an environmentalist,” said Veilleux, general manager of the U.S. operations of natural health ingredient manufacturer Euromed. “I’m a pragmatist. There’s a difference. A lot of environmentalists have characterized their cause as one that pits them directly against corporate America. I’m part of corporate America, but I also recognize the debt I owe to the environment and want to do my fair share to protect it. In the long run, it’s just good for business and there are plenty of examples throughout history of how our environment is one of our most valuable natural resources.” Veilleux’s company is partner with the Everglades Foundation in a campaign dubbed Glade-iator (www.glade-iator.org), which is a model of the public-private partnership Veilleux believes is good for business.
