First off, the Big Auto’s executives have a [long history](https://evannex.com/blogs/news/auto-industry-executives-continue-to-downplay-the-threat-from-tesla)
of taking shots at Tesla. Now, two industry giants, [VW](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/09/good-and-bad-in-texas-plan-to-spend-volkswagen-settlement-funds/)
and [GM](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/10/gm-ev-proposal-would-undercut-state-programs/),
have decided to join in.  They are now dismissing the Silicon Valley automaker altogether
and claim they’ll (instead) lead the EV revolution. Yet, their braggadocio, somehow,
doesn’t seem to make sense.

Larry Vellequette reports (via [Automotive News Europe](https://europe.autonews.com/article/20181112/COPY/311129988/vw-can-help-make-evs-mainstream-diess-says))
that Volkswagen’s rhetoric about electric vehicles is “the direct result of a strategy
shift that came after getting caught cheating on diesel-emissions testing.” So therefore,
deflecting attention from the [dieselgate scandal.](https://evannex.com/blogs/news/to-understand-what-tesla-is-up-against-watch-dirty-money-on-netflix)
Let’s not also forget the recent [cartel allegations.](https://evannex.com/blogs/news/even-on-their-home-turf-german-automakers-are-getting-worried-about-tesla)
[VW’s](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/05/test-drive-results-2022-vw-id-4-awd-pro-s-electric-vehicle/)
corporate communications vacillate wildly from reluctant-to-boastful when it comes
to the company’s EV plans.

In a puzzling interview with VW’s Herbert Diess, the company’s CEO downplays any
viable the electric cars.  He starts explaining, “if you are still driving far distances,
20,000 or 30,000 miles [per year], it’s probably not the right car.” And then with
EVs, Deiss adds, “you’re [driving on coal instead of oil](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/01/epa-vs-volkswagen-understanding-the-legal-battle/)”
mumbo jumbo. That said, he concedes, “Renewable energy is a must… [so] we will be
very big in electric cars worldwide because we are very strong in China.”

Well I am not CEO of VW.  However, I can tell you not everywhere in the world is
powering their cities with only by coal. Had he read my [book Build Your Own Electric Vehicle](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/11/high-voltage-insights-from-jim-motavallis-book/)
he would had learned that.  Most of the the US is NOT powered only by coal. Period!
