As I wrote a while ago after my first impressions of the 2018 Winter test of the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid electric car. I stared with: “All good”. By the way and for the record. These long-term tests are way better car companies. That’s cause I get more accurate readings on MPG here. It’s all about refreshing the batteries. That’s recharging the Niro plug-in Hybrid while driving in SPORT mode. Yes to recharging in the winter and getting from zero all the way up to 32 Miles.
So by doing this the first tank, the average was 62 miles per gallon (MPG).
The second tank is closer to 69 and 70 MPG. Also every day and night I also recharge the car. This is in colder weather too.
As I’ve written before: This Kia Niro has a rated at an EPA-estimated 26 miles of All-Electric Range. However after exercising the batteries it got over 32 miles all-electric.

Increased high-voltage battery capacity (+7.34 kWh more than Niro hybrid) and output/power have helped make the Niro Plug-in Hybrid an efficient, low emissions crossover with a 105 MPGe rating. The Niro PHEV’s compact, high voltage battery is neatly tucked under the cargo floor and under the rear seat and maintains the same spacious cargo capacity as the Niro hybrid. A single charging port is in the driver’s side front fender. A full charge can be achieved in about 2.5 hours via a 240V (Level 2) charger, and under 9 hours via a 120V (Level 1) charger.
The Niro PHEV employs the same six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) as the Niro. Drivers choose from several driving modes, including EV mode, Hybrid mode, (default) Eco mode, or Sport modes for having fun with the powertrain’s combined output of 139 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque.
