**Rejects Wastewater Disposal and Freshwater Extraction in Delaware River Basin
Region**

January 30, 2019

Trenton, N.J. – In a letter sent to the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) Executive
Director, [New Jersey](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/09/construction-commences-for-23-5-mw-solar-power-project-at-six-flags-great-adventure-in-jackson-new-jersey/)
Governor Phil Murphy announced he will vote in support of a permanent ban on [fracking](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/01/new-epa-rule-requires-chemical-disclosure-for-offshore-fracking/).
As well as and its associated activities. That’s including the treatment, [discharge](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/09/fracking-high-stakes-game-gas-extraction/),
storage and [disposal](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/09/fracking-high-stakes-game-gas-extraction/)
of fracking waste in the Delaware River Basin. In order for a full ban to move forward,
a majority of the five DRBC members, which includes governors of Delaware, New York,
and Pennsylvania, as well as the Army Corp of Engineers—must also vote in support.

A statement follows from Kim Ong, Senior Attorney at the Natural Resources Defense
Council ([NRDC](https://www.nrdc.org/media/2019/190130)):

![Wow, talk about making a splash in environmental policy! This image really brings
Governor Murphy's bold stance on fracking to life. Front and center, we've got this
massive "No Fracking" sign that's practically shouting from the riverbank. It's
like Mother Nature herself put up a "Do Not Disturb" sign, and I'm totally here
for it! The Delaware River Basin looks absolutely stunning in this scene. The water's
flowing peacefully, reflecting the sky like a mirror. It's surrounded by lush greenery
that'd make any nature lover weak in the knees. You can almost smell the fresh air
through the screen! But the real star of the show? That's got to be the silhouette
of Governor Murphy in the background. He's standing tall, arm stretched out over
the river like he's some kind of environmental superhero. And you know what? With
this fracking ban, he kind of is! The contrast in the image is pretty striking.
On one side, you've got this thriving ecosystem with trees and wildlife doing their
thing. On the other, there are hints of urban development. It's a powerful reminder
that we don't have to choose between progress and protecting our environment - we
can have both! The sky's a vibrant blue with those picture-perfect fluffy clouds.
It's like the weather itself is celebrating this eco-friendly decision. The whole
image just radiates this sense of hope and determination. It's saying, "Hey, we're
taking a stand for our environment, and we mean business!" This visual really drives
home the importance of Governor Murphy's call for a full fracking ban in the Delaware
River Basin. It's not just about policy - it's about preserving this beautiful landscape
for generations to come. It's about ensuring that the water stays clean, the air
stays fresh, and the wildlife keeps thriving. So, what do you think? Doesn't this
image make you want to go for a hike in the Delaware River Basin? Or better yet,
maybe it'll inspire you to support more eco-friendly policies in your own neck of
the woods. After all, if we all channel a little bit of that Governor Murphy energy,
imagine the positive impact we could have on our environment!](https://i0.wp.com/

In conclusion, Governor Murphy taking a courageous stand to defend the drinking
water source for over 17 million Americans. Finally, a full ban is protecting people’s
health from toxic wastewater. Also preserving the region’s freshwater supplies.
So the industry cannot drain them to frack in other parts of the country. They now
must be looking to the other governors represented on the Delaware River Basin Commission.
Thereby following New Jersey’s lead.

### Conclusion

Governor Murphy’s call for a full fracking ban in the Delaware River Basin marks
a significant step towards environmental protection and water resource conservation.
By supporting a permanent ban on fracking and its associated activities, including
wastewater treatment, discharge, storage, and disposal, Murphy is taking a stand
to safeguard the drinking water source for over 17 million Americans.

This move demonstrates a commitment to public health and environmental stewardship.
The ban would not only protect against the potential hazards of toxic wastewater
but also preserve the region’s freshwater supplies from being depleted for fracking
operations elsewhere.

#### Delaware River Basin Commission

The decision now rests with the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC), where a
majority vote is required to implement the full ban. With New Jersey leading the
charge, eyes are now on the governors of Delaware, New York, and Pennsylvania, as
well as the [Army Corps](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/12/army-corps-denies-easement-for-dakota-access-pipeline-reports-npr/)
of Engineers, to follow suit.

This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need to balance economic interests
with environmental protection. If successful, it could set a precedent for other
regions facing similar challenges, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural
resources for future generations.

The potential ban underscores the power of state-level action in shaping environmental
policy and highlights the critical role of interstate cooperation in managing shared
water resources. As we move forward, this decision could be a turning point in the
ongoing debate over fracking and its environmental impacts.
