With rising gas prices and increasing global temperatures, many people are looking for greener ways to travel. As well as reduce carbon emissions at the same time. Although driving your own vehicle may be more convenient and comfortable, it’s not always necessary. That’s especially when you’re traveling around town.

So whenever possible, opt for one of these eco-conscious and inexpensive modes of transportation to save money. Again, it’ll reduce air pollution and lower your carbon footprint. Finally, it’ll work toward creating a more sustainable lifestyle.

Mode of transportation

Walking

Besides producing no greenhouse gas emissions, walking is a great way to exercise. Although it may take a bit longer to arrive at your destination, walking is by far the most environmentally friendly.

Most importantly, it is inexpensive (as in, totally free!) mode of transportation. That’s for commuting to school or work or for running simple errands within your community. However, there are times when walking just won’t do. Especially because of distance, time constraints or the nature of your journey.

Bicycling

When walking isn’t practical, bicycling is an energy-efficient and quick way to travel. Travel farther without adding to air pollution problems. Bikes can be easily repaired and maintained at affordable prices over time. As well as you’ll never have to worry about the fluctuating cost of gas. If equipped with a basket or two, they also allow for larger amounts of cargo. For example, groceries to be carried home.

Electric bicycles, or e-bikes, are also good transport options for people who commute longer distances or those with health issues that prevent them from doing physically taxing activities. Riding an e-bike costs significantly less than owning a car and offers many benefits, including being more eco-friendly, affordable, and better for your health in the long run.

Skateboarding

Like bicycling, skateboarding offers a faster mode of transportation that’s powered by human energy — no emissions. The first cost of a good, reliable skateboard will quickly pay off once you consider the amount that you would have spent on gas or public transportation.

With new advances in technology, electric skateboards now allow for even swifter travel times with the same great experience that skateboarding has provided for years. Plus, it’s a way to get some regular exercise and makes moving around town a bit more fun.

Scooters

This eco-friendly mode of transportation comes in a variety of forms, some of which are man-powered and others that are not. Although gas-powered scooters can be an investment, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reported that even occasional scooter use would help reduce emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.

Whether you choose a funky electric Razor scooter or a stylish, gas-powered Vespa, scooters offer a greener alternative to traditional transportation, and most have some storage space available underneath the seat.

Public transportation

Consider public transportation as a great alternative to the aforementioned modes of travel. Especially in inclement weather. Many moderate to large-sized cities have public transit systems that are affordable, easy to reach and useful. Somewhat like carpooling (but with strangers), public transit is a reliable, money-saving way to travel. Especially in and around cities when it’s available.

Even if a fuel-operated vehicle is a must-have in your life, consider converting your automobile to electric or investing in an eco-friendly vehicle, such as a plugin hybrid.

In conclusion and in the meantime, use these low to no-emissions options. For nearly any kind of errand you’ll run. From grocery shopping to visiting friends, there’s a green travel alternative to meet your needs for local commutes. Finally, these eco-friendly modes of travel also give a simple, fun and affordable way to travel. As well as work fitness into your hectic daily schedule.

  1. I’ve always thought that a bicycle is the best way to explore a neighborhood. Walking doesn’t cover enough distance and from a car… you never really see anything.
