# Minimizing water usage with Ranchio

I wanted to introduce you to [Rachio](https://rachio.com/). First of all, Rachio
is a smart water sprinkler company. They are making products that therefore improve
outdoor water [efficiency](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/04/a-visual-guide-water-conservation/).

The [EPA reported](https://www.epa.gov/watersense/statistics-and-facts) that 50 
percent of the water we use outdoors is lost to inefficient irrigation systems. 
Also and if one sprinkler isn’t properly maintained can waste up to 25,000 gallons
annually. We’re using the earth’s resources at an unsustainable pace and our [lawn](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/06/simple-sustainable-living-tips-you-can-implement-today/)
irrigation is a critical area at fault. As a result, though there is no overnight
fix.

In 2014 cities got religion and started taking water issues serious. So from more
than 1,000 cities in all 50 states pledged to:

 * Reduce their annual consumption of freshwater by nearly a billion gallons;
 * Reduce waste sent to landfills by 18.3 million pounds;
 * Prevent more than 69.9 [million pounds of hazardous waste](https://greenlivingguy.com/2013/05/fish-waste-report-156-million-pounds-wasted/)
   from entering our watersheds; and
 * Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.7 million pounds.

So the Colorado-based company has already most noteworthy saved 22 billion [gallons of water](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/09/colgate-goes-michael-phelps-everydropcounts-campaign/)!!
