Porsche launching two new cogeneration plants. They are in operation in Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen. All enhancing its environmentally friendly energy mix. As well as close the remaining gap to CO2 neutral production. It’s because and all for the fully electric Taycan in Zuffenhausen.
Heat and energy produced in house
This production site has a long history. The heat and power plants. Plants with an output of two megawatts. All run exclusively on biogas and residual products. Consequently the residual products are produced from organic waste.
In contrast to conventional power plants, cogeneration plants are used to heat and power in parallel. They do not emit heat generated. Because it’s part of energy production. Pointless to go into the environment when instead they use it for heating. Their efficiency maximized by operating them close to the heat. Oh yeah heat is constantly required.
So near the paint shop or immersion baths and drying areas. Where steady process heat is needed. Approximately 90 percent of the heat generated will be used. All to heat and provide hot water for the office. As well as production buildings at the Porsche Zuffenhausen site. That’s where almost 12,000 people work and the plant runs at 83% efficiency.
The two new cogeneration plants will complement the heat and power generation solution. Those already in place at the site. That for which Porsche has used two natural gas plants. These plants also switching to biogas. In addition, Porsche / Stuttgart is on track using bioenergy from the city’s organic waste plant. All as soon as the City of Stuttgart commissions the plant in 2021.
The expansion of the cogeneration plants at the Porsche site in Zuffenhausen taking place alongside at same facility producing the Taycan. So the four-door electric sports car launching end of 2019. As well as a CO2-neutral process at the Zuffenhausen site. Their objective producing a CO2-neutral zero-emissions car.
In conclusion, Porsche is pursing the vision of a ‘zero-impact factory’.
