Gap Inc. is working with supply chain partners to source all cotton for its family
of brands from sustainable sources by 2025

# 2025

Gap Inc. today that it will derive 100% of its cotton from more sustainable sources
by 2025. [Cotton’s](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/09/how-one-of-the-dirtiest-textiles-is-getting-a-millennial-makeover/)
strong fibers are used in a significant portion of products across Gap Inc. brands,
and its cultivation spurs economic opportunity by supporting livelihoods in many
communities. However, much of the world’s cotton is grown in areas where people
have difficulty accessing clean water due to pollution and droughts – a situation
further exacerbated by [climate change](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/12/climate-change-affects-health/).
By sourcing sustainably farmed and sourced cotton, the company is supporting farmers
who use water efficiently through better irrigation practices.

## Less Water Use

For most people, cotton is a part of their daily lives, from the bed linens they
sleep on, to the pants and jackets they wear. Yet, cotton is one of the most water-
intensive crops grown. Currently, a single pair of jeans uses an average of 1,600
[gallons of water](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/04/longi-sets-solar-industry-record-for-rd-spending-according-pv-tech/)
throughout its full life cycle^(1), 64% of which is used to grow cotton.

Gap Inc.’s commitment to sustainability includes sourcing [Better Cotton Initiative](https://bettercotton.org/)(
BCI) cotton, and cotton that is organic, recycled, and verified American or Australian
grown.

### Better Cotton Initiative

Gap Inc. began sourcing Better Cotton in 2016. So BCI is a long-term multi-stakeholder
initiative. One that’s developing and promoting good farm practices. All while allowing
more cotton to be grown. Also while reducing water and chemical use. Thereby protecting
both working conditions and biodiversity.

Also, in BCI’s [latest global ranking](https://corporate.gapinc.com/en-us/articles/2018/11/gap-inc-lands-on-better-cotton-initiative-s-top-10)
of top companies who source sustainably grown BCI cotton by volume, Gap Inc. ranked#
4. Gap Inc. also has a manufacturing goal to conserve a total of 10 billion liters
of water by the end of 2020. Most noteworthy, those water savings would be the equivalent
volume of the daily drinking water needed for 5 billion people.

### Therefore this announcement builds on other Gap commitments.

That’s because Gap already established by several Gap Inc. [brands](https://corporate.gapinc.com/en-us/articles/2018/04/six-ways-gap-inc-is-becoming-more-sustainable).
In fact and by 2021, the Gap brand is committed to sourcing 100% of its cotton from
more sustainable sources.

In addition, Old Navy will also increase its sourcing of sustainable cotton to 100%
by 2022. Furthermore, Banana Republic will source 100% of its cotton from more sustainable
sources by 2023.

In May 2019, Gap Inc. CEO Art Peck announced more sustainability. It announced that
Old Navy, Gap, and Banana Republic are launching denim with 5% post-consumer mechanically-
[recycled cotton content](https://www.bloomberg.com/tosv2.html?vid=&uuid=6a589dd0-8e6e-11e9-acd2-6f8600228bf5&url=L25ld3MvYXJ0aWNsZXMvMjAxOS0wNS0xNi90aGUtY2xlYXJhbmNlLXJhY2staGFzLWEtdGVycmlibGUtY2FyYm9uLWZvb3RwcmludC1nYXAtY2VvLXNheXM=).

### In conclusion, Gap Inc. recognizes climate change.

As well as obtaining a sustainable cotton goal. This is also one way the company
is addressing the issue. The company has been [evolving its sustainability](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/03/evolve-golf-tee-for-a-sustainable-game/)
program. All consequently since the early 1990s. Especially when it developed labor
standards for garment manufacturers in its supply chain.

In addition, Athleta is now one of the largest apparel brands in the world to certify
as a [Certified B Corporation](https://bcorporation.eu/about-b-corps). All the while
empowering women and girls to reach their limitless potential.

### Hill City is the company’s newest menswear lifestyle brand.

It also launched as a B Corp brand. That’s most noteworthy by integrating sustainability
throughout its business.

Additionally and in December 2018, Gap Inc. was one of 43 founding signatories.
All for supporting the [Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action](https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/blog/2018/12/milestone-fashion-industry-charter-for-climate-action-launched/).
