The 2019 Golf SportWagen is available in three trims—S, S 4Motion, and SE.

I got to Test Drive the 4Motion.

For front-wheel-drive models, the 1.8T engine is replaced by the same 1.4T, 147hp powertrain found in the all-new 2019 Jetta. The S 4Motion retains the 1.8T engine.

In addition, the 1.4T is paired with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. All while the 1.8T is available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG® automatic transmission.

For the 2019 4Motion model has the Driver Assistance package. That’s including Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist), Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Traffic Alert.

Even though it was the 4Motion, this version had the SE model 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Also LED headlights with the Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), fog lights, auto-dimming rearview mirror, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping System, (Lane Assist), and High Beam Control (Light Assist).

So pricing for the 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen S with a standard six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive starting at $21,895 have you to think twice about this cad. No doubt. In addition, the eight-speed automatic transmission starts at $22,995.
Finally, pricing for the 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen S 4Motion® with a standard six-speed manual transmission starts at $24,395. The six-speed DSG automatic transmission starts at $25,495. The destination charge for all Golf SportWagen models is an additional $895.

VW 2019 SportWagen was a fun ride. The front-wheel-drive models adopt the 1.4-liter engine from the 2019 Jetta, which debuted earlier this year.

Value realignments across the lineup mean that the majority of models now feature standard driver-assist features. That’s including Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist). Also Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Traffic Alert.

The models that don’t include these features as standard offer them in Driver Assistance packages on the entry-level trims.

We’ve been singing the praises of the Volkswagen Golf for a decade. It’s one of our favorite cars, a 10Best Cars winner yet again for 2019, and a practical solution for people who love to drive and sometimes have large grocery hauls. But what of the driver with a family, or two dogs, or a business transporting framed posters? Enter the 2019 VW Golf SportWagen. A stretched Golf with a much larger cargo hold, the same excellent driving dynamics, and available all-wheel drive, it’s a compelling choice for drivers who need something without “compact” in the description but who still enjoy jaunts on winding roads. True, wagons have fallen out of fashion, and it’s unlikely that the SportWagen’s looks alone will inspire the envy of onlookers. But anyone who watches the SportWagen swallow a Home Depot haul will have no choice but to be impressed. Yet it’ll be much better once it goes electric or even plugin hybrid already.
