## Macy’s Cools Down and Lights Up with Green LED Retrofit

#### Macy’s Replaces Hot Halogen Spotlights with Super Efficient, Cool Burning, Green LED Lighting, Saving Millions.

November 2019 — Macy’s is trading heat for savings. The retail giant has replaced
its hot, inefficient halogen spotlights with super-efficient, [cool-burning](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/03/the-smithsonian-and-the-getty-testing-msi-led-lighting-for-museums/)
LED lighting. This move is part of a broader effort to modernize store operations
and cut carbon emissions.

### From Hot Halogens to Cool Efficiency

For years, Macy’s used halogen spotlights to illuminate its merchandise. These bulbs
ran hot, consumed large amounts of energy, and had short lifespans. Over time, the
heat raised in-store temperatures. That added strain on air conditioning systems—
and drove up electricity costs.

Now, the company has made a full switch to cool-burning LED lamps. These new lights
last longer, use far less energy, and produce much less heat. As a result, Macy’s
stores stay cooler, more comfortable, and much more efficient.

### Big Energy Savings, Bigger Results

Macy’s isn’t just saving a few dollars. The retrofit slashes energy use by up to
80% in some locations. Multiplied across hundreds of stores, the savings reach millions
of dollars annually. In fact, lighting has become one of the company’s biggest efficiency
wins to date.

Even better, the LEDs require less maintenance. Technicians no longer need to replace
burnt-out halogens as often. That means fewer disruptions on the sales floor—and
more time focused on operations that matter.

### A Better Experience for Shoppers and Staff

The benefits go beyond energy use. LED lighting delivers a brighter, more natural
light that enhances the in-store experience. Shoppers now see merchandise more clearly.
Colors appear more vivid and accurate.

Employees notice the difference too. Cooler temperatures mean more comfortable shifts.
With less heat and glare, the workplace feels better—and runs smoother.

All this adds up to a stronger retail environment. Macy’s knows that in today’s
market, customer experience matters more than ever. Efficient lighting supports
that goal without compromise.

### Climate Action, Business Smarts

Macy’s decision isn’t just about dollars. It’s also about leadership. The company
continues to take climate action seriously. By slashing energy use, it reduces its
carbon footprint while setting an example for other retailers.

This retrofit builds on previous sustainability efforts. Macy’s has already invested
in solar panels, efficient HVAC systems, and better building design. The LED lighting
upgrade strengthens that foundation. It shows how environmental goals and business
efficiency can align.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for roughly 20% of
commercial energy use. Swapping halogens for LEDs is one of the fastest, simplest
ways to cut that figure. Macy’s embraced that truth—and is now reaping the rewards.

### What’s Next?

With lighting upgrades complete, Macy’s is looking ahead. More energy-saving systems
are on the table. That includes smart sensors, advanced climate control, and green
building certifications.

Customers, employees, and stakeholders are all paying attention. They expect more
from major retailers. Macy’s is proving that efficiency, sustainability, and profitability
can work together.

This is the future of retail. It’s cooler, cleaner, and definitely brighter.

make major strides in LED energy savings in 2010. Consequently they did this for
their ongoing drive to reduce energy consumption. Thereby cutting waste as part
of the company’s comprehensive energy program.  Then combining it with sustainability
and operating efficiency.

# Green Lighting

I mean If You Go Green Lighting in Your Macy’s  then Go LED!

Then we see the future in certain stores to smart LED bulbs. Think folks since they
do use at least 75 less energy.  So the green is also cash savings on [lighting in your home](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/10/go-green-and-save-money-with-led-lighting-in-your-home/)!

As written before and According to the Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency
and Renewable Energy. [LED lighting will save Americans more than $30 billion](https://web.archive.org/web/20170226204823/https://energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2013/09/f2/200130917-revolution-now.pdf)
annually in electricity costs. It will cut lighting consumption in half by the year
2030. But there are more incentives to switch to LED lighting than just trimming
your budget. According to The Climate Group, lighting accounts for 6 percent of
our global CO2 greenhouse emissions. This figure is roughly equal to 70 percent
of the CO2 emissions of the world’s passenger cars. Whether you want to save money,
the environment, or both, there are easy and creative ways you can go green.

The company replaced about 117,000 traditional incandescent light bulbs. That’s
most noteworthy in 86 Macy’s stores. All with new LED bulbs.  What happened most
importantly was energy use got cut by about 73 percent less energy.

## Total energy savings are estimated at about 16,200 megawatts per hour every year, the equivalent of planting more than 65,500 trees.

The LED lamps have an expected life of 10 years yet mine are still going after 10
years. That’s also compared with less than one year for traditional bulbs. Thereby
reducing landfill of those or fluorescent mercury disposal.

The conversion to LED was a simple matter of unscrewing and screwing in the new
bulbs. The results were immediate and dramatic. Unlike hot burning halogen lights,
the extremely efficient LED lights produce very little heat. So within hours of
installation, store employees noticed a drop in the store’s temperature.

LED lighting produces savings that go far beyond just cooling cost. LED’s use a
fraction of the power required by halogen spots while producing a clean, clear light
that enhances product displays and merchandise.

Additional saving realized in the lower maintenance and replacement cost for LED
lighting. The typical 60-watt halogen light burning 12 hours a day will need to
be replaced approximately every six months. The new Macy’s LED lamps burning 12
hours a day will last for more than a decade.
