# Canon Goes Real on Coral Reefs

However, climate change serves as the biggest threat to our beautiful coral reefs**.**
So there has been a sizable loss of keystone coral species**.** We mean several 
of which are now listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). 

#### Aligning with its corporate commitment of sustainability. As well as its dedication to conservation and the environment.

Because Canon participated in the Coral Reef Restoration Project. For it was spearheaded
by the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

#### To help promote population recovery, university scientists, students and Canon team members embarked on a collaborative expedition. All to establish the Canon Reef restoration site off Key Biscayne, Florida. 

So the process of building the “Canon Reef” included collecting small fragments 
of coral. They were from coral colonies growing within an underwater nursery. Thereby
preparing the corals for transplanting. So then you go out-planting. Finally resultant
colonies on the pre-selected site.

Project is vitally important to our research efforts,” said Dalton Hesley. Dalton
is the senior research associate at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School.
Also director of the school’s Rescue a Reef Program. “Our lab has worked relentlessly.
All to understand the factors influencing coral growth and survivorship. So this
initiative allows us to take even more significant steps in this endeavor.”

### Rescue a Reef

The Rescue a Reef program educates participants on the critical role coral reefs
play in the [environment](https://greenlivingguy.com/2006/06/greenlands-ice-sheet-is-slip-sliding-away/)
and economy, and the threats they face, as well as provides them with an opportunity
to learn of the tools available for reef conservation and restoration.
