When most people think of air pollution, their minds immediately associate it with the great outdoors.

From automobiles to industrial smokestacks, pollution for most people only exists outside. However, the truth is that the air inside your home can be just as polluted.  Likewise and sometimes even more polluted, as the air outside.

So according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American spends 93 percent of their life indoors. That’s with also 6 percent of that number accounting for time spent in automobiles.

With a majority of Americans spending that much time indoors, it only makes sense. Especially to make sure that the air inside your home is fresh and clean as well.

In this article, I will be discussing three of the easiest and most effective things that you can do in order to reduce air pollution in your home.

Change Air Filters Frequently

There are many different air filters present in your home, and it is extremely important to make sure that all of them are clean. Air filters tend to get dirty over time and as a result, they can no longer filter out air effectively. Most people neglect the majority of their air filters and solely focus on their AC unit when they are doing some cleaning around the house. Unfortunately, solely focusing on your AC unit is not enough to help reduce air pollution in your home. You need to pay attention to every single air filter that is present. Your vacuum cleaner, washer, dryer, and even kitchen vents should all be cleaned or replaced every two to three months. Changing or cleaning all of these filters so frequently can become very costly, but there is one thing that you can do to make this process affordable.

For example, install eco-friendly and reusable air filters. Cause Installing one of these types of filters can help save you money over traditional disposable filters in the long run because you can simply just wash and reinstall them multiple times. Using washable and reusable air filters will help reduce the air pollution in your home at an affordable price.

Take Care of Your Rugs And Carpets

Aside from looking great in a home, rugs and carpets also serve another purpose; they are excellent at capturing dust and capturing harmful particles in the air. However, just like air filters, if you do not clean your rugs or carpets, they become filled with too many particles and as a result, can not work efficiently. That is why it is so important to take care of your rugs and carpets. Just doing something as simple as cleaning your rugs and carpets can dramatically decrease the amount of air pollution in your home.

Buy Indoor Plants

Indoor plants are the best for indoor air quality

If you are looking for a more natural way to reduce air pollution in your home, then you may want to consider purchasing an indoor plant. Plants act as natural air filters and will immediately reduce the air pollution in your home. However, just like with air filters, rugs and carpets need to be taken care of and provided with adequate water and sunlight. Simply purchasing a plant will only reduce the air pollution in your home while it is alive. If you don’t take care of it and it dies, it will no longer be able to filter out toxins in the air. Although all plants technically act as natural air filters. For example, spider plants, peace lilies, and english ivy’s tend to do a better job of filtering out toxic air than others. Plants can not only help reduce the air pollution in your home. They can also provide your home with a little decor as well.

In conclusion, many people think of their homes as some sort of safe haven where the air is 100 percent clean. As well as pollution does not exist within its confines. Although, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Cause air pollution does exist in homes. Similarly, the fact that the average American spends a majority of their lives indoors. This furthermore means it is extremely important to be aware of this reality. Finally, taking simple steps to reduce the air pollution in your home will ultimately improve your overall health as well as your quality of life.
