# An increasing number of school districts are testing and adopting electric school buses.

For they are joining the movement about electric school buses. A large bastion of
oil and diesel consumption.  Moreover pollution as well.

This is all to help promote safer, more reliable and cost-effective transportation
for students.

[School districts and contractors leveraging battery-powered buses](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/12/electric-school-buses-what-new-yorkers-need-to-know/)
gain several benefits, including:

 1. Lower operating costs
 2. Improved student safety and community health
 3. Less frequent maintenance
 4. Simplified fueling

While transitioning buses to [electric can be a complex project](https://greenlivingguy.com/2008/07/electric-car-project-kennedy-promos-israeli-better-place/).
Yet school districts can be working with an electrification service provider. Those
that will reduce upfront cost barriers. Also and help ensure schools can design
and install an energy infrastructure. Those that supports future fleet scalability
needs.

## 1- Reduced Total Cost of Ownership for an electric school bus

A primary advantage of electric school buses is lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
The upfront cost of an electric bus is approximately $120,000 more than an internal
combustion engine bus, but an [electric school bus will save](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/07/electric-truck-fleet-conversion-for-cost-efficiency/)
fleet operators an estimated $170,000 to $240,000 in lifetime fuel and maintenance
costs.^(1)

### Districts Real Cost for an Electric School Bus

Districts taking advantage of federal and state grants, rebates and other incentive
opportunities will further reduce overall costs.

Early-adopter pilot runs of schools [rolling out electric buses](https://greenlivingguy.com/2007/06/113-gm-hybrid-powered-buses-rolling-into-new-york/)
have already demonstrated TCO gains.

West Fargo Public Schools, in North Dakota, runs 63 bus routes each day. In 2018,
the district inquired about [electric school buses](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/02/epa-bus-grants-revolutionizing-school-transportation/)
and received the state’s first zero-emission electric bus the following year.^(2)

“The initial cost of the bus was three times more than a diesel bus. But the bus’s
operational costs are only one-fourth that of our district’s diesel buses,” said
Brad Redmond, West Fargo Public Schools’ transportation director.

Redmond added that the district’s existing diesel bus fleet spends an average of
42 cents per mile on fuel. Now that’s compared to 14 cents per mile in energy costs
with the electric bus.

The battery-powered electric school bus averages between [25 and 34 miles per gallon](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/12/thermalito-union-elementary-school-district-buys-six-all-electric-school-buses-from-greenpower-motor/).
That’s compared to 7 miles per gallon for its diesel counterparts.

In addition, the district runs its electric school bus for an estimated 100 miles
before [charging](https://greenlivingguy.com/2020/05/more-than-100-blue-bird-electric-school-buses-have-been-ordered-so-far-cummins-electric-drive/).
So for a few hours after each route you charge up. That which [drivers say is easy to manage](https://greenlivingguy.com/2024/08/electric-school-buses-driving-a-greener-future-across-america/).

In Tacoma, Wash., the Franklin Pierce [School District runs 51 bus](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/10/epas-clean-school-bus-program-to-award-ny-school-districts-69620000/)
routes each day within a 14-square-mile area. It received $330,000 in grant money
to electrify one [electric school](https://greenlivingguy.com/2023/06/electric-vehicle-charging-cost-from-zero-to-hero/)
bus from its mid-’90s model fleet and install a charging station.^(3)

Franklin Pierce [School District buses](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/01/school-districts-electric-buses-and-their-challenges/)
typically cover 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year. After one year of operation, the
[electric school](https://greenlivingguy.com/2008/07/save-on-electricity-and-help-environment-too/)
bus produced $8,000 in fuel savings. That’s not even the maintenance savings from
an [electric school buses](https://greenlivingguy.com/2007/12/scooters-electric-fleet-nypd-replace-motorcycles/)
if they all became a fleet of buses.

### 2 – Student and Community Health Benefits

[Schools using buses](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/01/new-jersey-electric-buses-transforming-school-transport/)
that emit zero emissions are safer for students, nearby people and the environment.
^(4)Electric buses are also quieter to operate compared to diesel-powered buses,
which Redmond says promotes good student behavior and helps reduce driver fatigue.

“Learning to drive the bus was easy, but one of the biggest benefits has been how
much better the students behave due to the reduction in the bus noise levels,” he
added.

[Buses leveraging electric](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/12/how-electric-shuttle-buses-improve-air-quality-in-nj/)
power also have a positive impact on student cognitive functioning. Studies show
that students perform better academically and have better overall health when exposed
to fewer emissions than other children.^(5)

### 3 – Reduced Maintenance and Repairs

Electric school buses have fewer moving parts than their diesel-powered counterparts(
exactly how I wrote in [Build Your Own Electric Vehicle](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/10/norway-ev-charging-roads-a-revolutionary-concept/),
2nd and 3rd edition. So that’s meaning they are less likely to need repairs or replacements
over time. For school districts, electrification means their fleet will have more
uptime. Yes folks than existing diesel buses to transport students more reliably.

Another benefit of [electric buses](https://greenlivingguy.com/2023/03/electric-car-battery-debunking-myths/)
is converting kinetic energy to battery charge via regenerative braking technology.
So going downhill or across flat roadways it also creates better [fuel efficiency](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/04/go60mpg-sets-record-straight-as-both-new-york-auto-show-and-dc-etda-conference-near/)
and decreases the wear on brakes and tires.

In addition, [electric buses](https://greenlivingguy.com/2007/12/scooters-electric-fleet-nypd-replace-motorcycles/)
also eliminate the need for fleet operators to conduct traditional maintenance tasks.

So for example, diesel-powered vehicles, including:

 * Oil and brake fluid changes
 * Engine tuneups
 * Spark plug, drive belt or fuel filter replacement

### 4 – Convenient Fueling

Unlike diesel-powered buses, battery-powered buses can be [fueled directly on the school campus or at the bus garage](https://greenlivingguy.com/2024/08/electric-school-buses-driving-a-greener-future-across-america/).
That’s freeing up time for bus drivers. On-site charging infrastructure allows drivers
to keep buses optimally fueled without returning to a central depot. Thereby increasing
reliability and enabling longer-range route planning.

“We have saved [money](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/01/green-actress-running-la-marathon-for-project-save-our-surf/)
in fuel and employee hours since there are no runs to the fuel station. And our
transportation department employees value that there is no emission buildup in the
bus [garage](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/06/environment-plastic-bag-how-to-stay-in-a-big-city-9-ways/),”
said Redmond.

Since school bus fleets have predictable schedules with long breaks in between use(
both during the school day and during the summer), fleet owners have the opportunity
to leverage [vehicle-to-grid](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/12/electric-vehicle-to-grid-services-can-feed-stabilize-power-supply/)(
V2G) technology. All that can also generate revenue. Buses not in use can charge
when prices are low. So they participate in grid [services](https://greenlivingguy.com/2024/04/governor-kathy-hochul-reports-nys-clean-energy-job-growth/)
for use during peak demand periods.

#### Managed Charging vs. Unmanaged Charging

Managed charging software allows districts to plug in a bus, and have the bus only
charge when, and if needed. The chargers can also be programmed to charge the school
bus during the least expensive times of day. This new managed charging infrastructure
helps to reduce standby power and decrease the total [cost of energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/04/5-ways-to-save-money-on-energy-costs/).

Unmanaged charging infrastructures aren’t programmed to avoid charging during peak
times, in turn, costing districts more. See the example below:

**Maintenance and Safety**

While electric buses require less maintenance because they have fewer moving parts,
technicians still need to know. For they will still need to be trained in how to
safely service electric buses. Maintenance technicians will also require training.
For that’s on electric engines and subsystems, including:

 1. cooling
 2. [HVAC](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/12/army-corps-denies-easement-for-dakota-access-pipeline-reports-npr/)
 3. air compressors
 4. and power steering.

In addition to training just the staff that will be [driving and maintaining your electric](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/11/chicago-drive-electric-showcases-ev-excitement/)
school bus fleet. Also additional expense will be brought about from:

 1. Site wide safety training for [electricity and vehicle](https://greenlivingguy.com/2008/10/motor-trend-magazine-review-of-build-your-own-electric-vehicle/)
    charging
 2. Fire suppression systems because of increased risk of electricity fire
 3. Maintaining electric and diesel parts inventory
 4. Tooling required for electric school bus maintenance
