## Vote Out Fluorescent

Vermont is phasing out fluorescent tube lights over [LEDs](https://greenlivingguy.com/2020/02/what-is-a-par-led-light-meter-plus-how-is-it-different-from-other-light-meters/).
Vermont is doing this because it [reduces costs](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/04/led-company-lights-green-sporting-events-saving-energy-plus-tons-of-co2-emissions/),
greenhouse gases and mercury pollution. The price per bulb are a little more expensive
then fluorescent bulbs in residential living ($1.18 extra).

But in commercial living it is two dollars [cheaper](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/05/nevada-says-yes-to-green-lighting/).
The lifetime in the [bulbs](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/10/turning-a-green-choice-into-a-healthy-choice-with-cree-led/)
are almost doubled, and the [watts](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/05/how-an-led-can-replace-two/)
that come out of it are double compared to fluorescent bulbs.⌊Vote out fluorescent
LED bulbs⌉

In these bulbs there are no mercury which is the best first start. For if these
bulbs drop no [contamination](https://greenlivingguy.com/2024/07/bulb-recycle-at-the-home-depot-a-sustainable-solution/)!

According to [ACEEE:](https://www.aceee.org/blog-post/2022/07/states-can-phase-out-fluorescent-tubes-favor-leds-vermont-just-did)

Signed by Governor Phil Scott on May 19. That’s Vermont’s law will [end the sale](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/01/light-bulb-rider-could-endanger-u-s-jobs/)
of four-foot fluorescent tubes by 2024. [California](https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB2208)
lawmakers are also considering enacting similar legislation this year. Finally and
other states may do so when their [legislatures](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/01/energy-efficiency-with-led-technology-pushed-by-mayors/)
reconvene in 2023. (In Rhode Island, one chamber passed such a bill this year.)
So let’s vote out fluorescent!

<

p style=”font-weight: 400;”>The four-foot tubes at issue in the Vermont law are
often found in commercial [buildings](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/05/the-top-3-diets-that-have-been-scientifically-supported-in-2022/)
and in some kitchens, basements, and garages. They are the most common type of linear
fluorescent light, representing about 90% of installations.

Though fluorescent [bulbs were once considered an efficient](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/11/green-led-bulbs-and-energy-efficiency-trends/)
option—at least in comparison to incandescents. For great advances in [LEDs](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/08/creating-a-more-sustainable-home-with-smart-technology-lighting/)
in recent years have dulled their shine. A [recent study](https://www.aceee.org/research-report/b2202)
we co-published comprehensively shows that [LEDs](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/08/uc-davis-green-lighting-center-gets-bigger-smarter-and-10-million-in-new-grants/)
are now available in all needed shapes and sizes. So they cost less to own and operate
than fluorescents. That’s great news, because the LEDs use about [half as much energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2010/05/anl-lighting-transforming-west-point-with-led-technology/).
All which means they have lower greenhouse gas emissions. Especially because they
don’t [contain the toxic mercury](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/10/mercury-cfls-amount-myths-vs-reality/)
that fluorescent bulbs do.
