Washington, DC—_The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) released
the following statement from Steven Nadel._ Nadel is the executive director, in
response to the U.S. Energy Information Administration [_forecasting_](https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/special/winter/2022_Winter_Fuels.pdf)_
high energy costs this winter:_

“High energy costs for natural gas, oil, and electricity are going to hurt. Particularly
for low-income and Black, Hispanic, and Native American households, which pay a
[much larger share](https://www.aceee.org/energy-burden) of their income on energy
bills.

“Poorly insulated homes and inefficient equipment leave many [families](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/07/great-review-of-do-it-yourself-home-energy-audits-by-sustainablog/)
paying for a lot of heat that goes to waste. Energy [price](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/03/energy-efficiency-becomes-year-round-going-haiku-fan-big-ass-fans-business/)
increases cause utility bills to spike the most in inefficient houses and buildings.

“If our houses and apartments were more [efficient](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/04/how-to-make-your-home-more-energy-efficient/),
we’d be much better prepared to handle high energy costs. But even many brand-new
homes aren’t well sealed or insulated, thanks to outdated building codes in much
of the country. Moreover, many homes have [inefficient heating systems](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/02/apartment-home-energy-guide-tips-winterizing-guide/)
that are expensive to run.

p style=”font-weight: 400;”>“Most families can’t be expected to address these problems
by themselves. Many utilities, states, and also [cities](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/05/city-energy-efficiency-scorecard-city-rank/)
have programs. Especially to help homeowners and rental property owners make efficiency
upgrades. Moreover and the recent federal climate law is set to deliver a big boost.
For that’s  with rebates and tax credits. But we need an even broader effort. States
and cities can create and expand programs that help homeowners, and rental housing
owners make energy upgrades to [reduce](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/07/cogeneration-goes-global/)
energy waste and cut utility bills. Most immediately, they can [use pandemic relief funds](https://www.aceee.org/webinar/new-federal-funding-opportunities-affordable-housing-retrofits)
to weatherize more homes of low-income households.”
