## Decrease the Use of Large Appliances

Large appliances like the stove, dishwashers, and dryers tend to generate a lot
of heat. When you’re preparing meals, try to focus on meals that don’t require you
to turn on the stove. If you need to heat [food](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/04/amazing-eco-friendly-food-tips-and-ideas/)
up, try to use a small air fryer or a toaster oven to get the job done. Wait until
the dishwasher is completely full to run a load. Make sure you have a full load
before you run the washer and dryer. If you must run large appliances, run them
at night when it’s still cool.

## Check the HVAC Unit

Check your HVAC unit in order to make sure it’s in great condition. Change the air
filters to make sure the air flows freely without a ton of extra effort. In order
to make sure everything is in working condition, contact local professionals from
a company like [Environmental Air Systems, Inc](https://www.environmentalair.com/residential-services#ResidentialACSystemServices).

## Hang Wet Sheets and Blackout Curtains

Always prioritize the windows because window treatments can be extremely effective
in order to [maintain a cool home](https://greenlivingguy.com/2023/07/eco-friendly-clean-home-kids-pets-how-maintain/).
For starters, wait until the sun sets in order to open the window. Nighttime tends
to be the coolest time. Gather a bunch of flat sheets, and wet them all with [cold water](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/11/make-small-changes-in-your-everyday-tasks/).
Then, hang each sheet in front of an open window. If there’s a nighttime breeze,
this will help you cool the room down faster. You won’t need to keep the wet sheet
over the window for a long time because it’ll cool the room down rapidly.

## Close the Doors

When you’d like to [heat up a home](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/01/home-heat-energy-tips-to-cut-your-bills/),
it’s best to leave the doors open. This allows the hot [air to flow freely through the home](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/08/decorative-plants-help-clean-your-air-home-eco-tested/).
This also means that the heater doesn’t have to work as hard to heat up the home.
If you want to stifle the [heat and keep the home cool](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/12/community-cooling-centers-provide-essential-relief/),
close all of the interior doors behind you.

Some of these tips require a shift in routine. They might feel tough to adapt at
first. However, when you’re able to reap the benefits of a cool [home as you stay green](https://greenlivingguy.com/2024/12/home-depot-lamp-recycling-the-bright-way-to-go-green/),
it’ll feel worth it.
