It is no secret that the plant power is the new grid in New York. For it has been
under tremendous stress as a whole grid in recent years. For that’s  due to a variety
of causes. I mean including extreme weather events and population growth. To help
alleviate the strain on the power grid, [Tesla](http://www.Tesla.com) and [ConEdison](http://www.coned.com)
teamed up to create a virtual power plants (VPP) agreement with the help of Tesla
[Powerwalls](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/02/tesla-solar-roof-plus-energy-update-besides-my-roof/).
Thereby creating a microgrid family of energy plants.  This virtual power plants(
VPP) agreement has allowed thousands of home [solar](https://greenlivingguy.com/2012/02/spi-1-mw-utility-scale-solar-energy-facility/)
and energy storage systems. All to reduce the overall demand for peak plants. Those
which are typically powered by natural gas.

## Energy Storage

For this is an important development. Especially as natural gas-powered peak plants
are known to have a significant environmental impact due to their reliance on a
finite resource. Additionally, [natural gas-powered peak power plants](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/07/climate-deniers-to-destroy-the-endangerment-finding/)
must be turned on and off in order to meet the peak demand for electricity. Therefore,
this constant switching on and off can produce large amounts of air pollution. Moreover
it can also result in cold-start problems in populated areas. For example and like
[Manhattan](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/11/solar-one-nyc-economic-development-corporation-council-member-dan-garodnick-break-ground-on-solar-ones-environmental-education-center/)
and the boroughs.

### Virtual Power Plant Agreement

That’s why the [virtual power plant](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/09/used-ev-battery-energy-for-virtual-power-plants/)
agreement between Tesla and ConEdison is helping. Many different power plants is
nice. Especially to reduce the amount of natural gas-powered peak plants. Those
that are needed to meet the electricity demand in New York. Because this is a major
step forward. All in terms of reducing the environmental impacts of our electricity
grid. Additionally, this virtual power plant agreement is helping to reduce the
amount of air pollution. For it’s caused by natural gas-powered peak plants.

#### Sunrun

Sunrun, a leading provider of [solar energy solutions](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/11/solar-energy-battery-storage-solutions-in-north-america/).
It has also been a major proponent of virtual power plants. In addition, Sunrun
won a cost-competitive bid into the Independent System Operator (ISO) market in
2019. All which is a wholesale electricity market that allows customers to buy and
sell [energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/07/smart-grid-energy-transforming-electricity-access/)
from the grid. Now this is a major step towards creating more renewable energy sources
for New Yorkers. Furthermore, Sunrun has also been vocal in their support of virtual
power plants.

#### Reduce Emissions while Backing Up the Grid

It’s quite evident that the virtual power plant agreement between Tesla and ConEdison
is a great example of how renewable [energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/10/the-powerful-environmental-benefits-of-remote-work/)
sources can be used to benefit the environment and reduce the strain on the power
grid. The agreement has allowed thousands of home solar and [energy storage](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/10/home-energy-costs-reduce-them-with-renovations/)
systems to reduce the overall demand for peak plants, which are typically powered
by natural gas. Additionally, Sunrun’s cost-competitive bid into the ISO market
has allowed customers to buy and sell energy from these [micro-grids](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/04/japans-21-million-microgrid-investment-boosting-renewable-sector-says-globaldata/).
All which is another major step forward in terms of reducing the environmental impacts
of our electricity grid.

However, it is important to note that there is still more work to be done in order
to reduce the environmental impacts of our electricity grid. We must continue to
explore new renewable energy sources, such as [wind and solar](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/12/solar-and-wind-energy-in-2025/),
and find ways to reduce our reliance on natural gas-powered peak plants. Additionally,
we must continue to advocate for [policies that promote renewable energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2006/04/bush-reportedly-regrets-global-warming-energy-policy-decisions/)
sources and reduce our reliance on finite resources.

In addition, the virtual power plant agreement between Tesla and ConEdison is an
important step. Especially towards creating a more [sustainable and reliable electricity](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/11/ford-f-line-e-a-new-era-for-electric-freight/)
grid in New York. It is also helping to reduce the amount of natural gas-powered
peak plants. Those that are needed to meet the electricity demand in New York. All
the while also reducing the amount of air pollution caused by natural gas-powered
peak plants. Additionally, Sunrun’s cost-competitive bid into the ISO market is
helping to create more renewable energy sources for New Yorkers. As we continue
to explore new renewable energy sources and advocate for policies that promote them,
we can create a more [sustainable and reliable electricity](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/11/ford-f-line-e-europes-first-production-electric-truck/)
grid for all.
