The new method uses a solvent. OE that’s called dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). That’s
I heard to separate the different layers of the solar cell. That’s so cool.

## Solar Cell New Methods for Recycling

More importantly, solar cells are a key component of [renewable energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/06/gamechange-solar-enhances-performance-in-tough-climates/).
However their production [creates a significant environmental impact](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/11/local-food-networks-create-environmental-impact/).
Furthermore, the limited lifespan of solar cells. I mean it means that they need
to be recycled. Especially once they reach the end of their [life cycle](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/05/solar-panel-recycling-co-leads-australia-in-emerging-industry/).
However, traditional recycling methods are often inefficient. Moreover, they are
harmful to the environment.

The new method developed by the Chalmers researchers uses a solvent called dimethyl
sulfoxide (DMSO). For that’s to gently dissolve the different layers of the solar
cell. In addition, DMSO is a non-toxic and biodegradable solvent. Thereby making
it an eco-friendly alternative to traditional solvents.

## 95% of Solar Cells are Recycleable

Once the layers are separated, they are cleaned and can be reused in new solar cells.
Moreover, the researchers were able to recover over 95% of the materials in the
solar cell. That’s making the process highly efficient.

The new [recycling method](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/11/mags-marine-trash-gasification-technology-explained/)
has significant implications for the environment. In addition, by using a non-toxic
and biodegradable solvent. For the researchers have [eliminated the need for toxic chemicals](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/05/lowes-home-flooring-eliminates-toxic-chemicals/)
in the recycling process.

### Conclusion

In conclusion, the gentle method also allows for eco-friendly [recycling of solar](https://greenlivingguy.com/2023/07/solar-panel-recycling-innovation-zero-carbon-future/).

Overall, the new recycling [method](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/10/researchers-plastic-chemical-technology-increase-recycling/)
developed by Chalmers University of Technology is a major breakthrough. Especially
in the [fight against climate change](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/12/pacific-islanders-fight-for-survival-against-changes/).
By using a non-toxic and [efficient method for recycling solar](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/08/solar-panel-winter-production-and-efficiency-tips/)
cells. Finally, the researchers have paved the way for a more [sustainable](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/07/pumped-up-research/)
future.
