We rely on our laptops for work, communication, entertainment, and more. However,
the convenience of modern computing comes at an environmental cost. The energy consumption
and manufacturing processes associated with laptops. For they contribute to carbon
emissions and resource depletion. I’m an environmentally conscious citizen of Earth.
Yet how can you make your laptop usage more [eco-friendly](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/10/how-to-make-your-startup-more-eco-friendly/)?

## Choose a Laptop with Energy-Efficient Hardware

The first step in [reducing your laptop’s carbon footprint](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/04/reduce-your-carbon-footprint-best-ways/)
is to make an informed choice. Especially when purchasing your device. Look for
laptops with energy-efficient processors and also those displays.[ ](https://www.energystar.gov/products/what_makes_product_energy_star#:~:text=ENERGY%20STAR%20products%20are%20the,the%20US%20Department%20of%20Energy.)
[Energy Star-certified](https://www.energystar.gov/products/what_makes_product_energy_star#:~:text=ENERGY%20STAR%20products%20are%20the,the%20US%20Department%20of%20Energy.)
laptops are designed to consume less power. All the while maintaining exceptional
performance. Additionally, [consider](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/03/3-reasons-why-you-should-consider-buying-solar-panels/)
laptops with solid-state drives (SSDs). That’s instead of traditional hard disk
drives (HDDs). I mean since SSDs require less [energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/04/reducing-energy-debts-from-covid-19/)
to run.

### Optimize Power Settings

One of the simplest ways to reduce energy consumption is to adjust your [laptop’s](https://greenlivingguy.com/2024/08/green-energy-huawei-powering-saudi-arabias-red-sea-project/)
power settings. Most operating systems offer power management options that allow
you to control how your [laptop](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/11/small-scale-wind-power-for-urban-energy-needs/)
uses energy. For example, you can set your laptop to enter sleep mode when you want
to take a short break or adjust the screen [brightness to save battery power](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/03/bright-idea-shops-acknowledges-the-power-of-picnics/).
By making these small changes, you can significantly [reduce your laptop’s energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/08/wind-energy-eagle-detection-reduces-collision-risks/)
consumption.

#### Unplug and Unpower

Avoid leaving your laptop in standby mode when not in use; turn it off [completely to save energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/11/off-grid-power-energy-for-complete-independence/).
Leaving your laptop on when not in use consumes energy, requiring more frequent
charging. Granted, some people have a situation where [mac won’t shut ](https://setapp.com/how-to/how-to-fix-mac-wount-shut-down)
[down just](https://setapp.com/how-to/how-to-fix-mac-wount-shut-down)[ restarts](https://setapp.com/how-to/how-to-fix-mac-wount-shut-down).
But there are ways to fix that.

What’s more, many of us leave our laptops plugged in even when they are fully charged.
This constant charging consumes unnecessary [energy and shortens the battery](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/06/bmw-battery-energy-storage-system-announced-at-evs29-montreal/)
lifespan. Unplug it when it’s fully charged and use it on battery power until it
needs recharging again. Additionally,

#### Use Eco-Friendly Accessories

Your laptop is not the only part of your computing setup that can [impact its carbon](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/01/carbon-embodied-construction-and-its-hidden-impact/)
footprint. The accessories you use, such as printers, external hard drives, and
peripherals, also consume energy. Choose energy-efficient accessories and consider
investing in solar-powered chargers or rechargeable batteries to [reduce your environmental impact](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/08/9-ways-to-reduce-environmental-footprint-emissions/)
further.

#### Reduce E-Waste

The disposal of electronic waste is a significant environmental concern. To reduce
e-waste, consider extending the lifespan of your laptop by upgrading its components,
such as RAM or storage, instead of buying a new one when it starts to slow down.
And when it’s time to replace your laptop, [recycle](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/05/ahead-of-heat-awareness-day-connecting-record-heat-to-climate-crisis-is-critical/)
it properly or donate it to an organization that can refurbish and reuse it.

#### Green Software Practices

Optimizing your laptop’s software can also contribute to [reducing its carbon footprint](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/04/green-living-energy-reducing-your-carbon-footprint/).
Delete unnecessary files and applications, as a cluttered hard drive can slow down
your laptop and increase[ ](https://www.energy.nh.gov/consumers/energy-efficiency/energy-efficiency-programs-and-services/tips-managing-your-electric)
[energy consumption](https://www.energy.nh.gov/consumers/energy-efficiency/energy-efficiency-programs-and-services/tips-managing-your-electric).
Additionally, consider using open-source software, which is often designed to be
more resource-efficient than its proprietary counterparts.

### Conclusion

By making thoughtful choices when purchasing, using, and disposing of laptops and
accessories, as well as adopting energy-saving practices, we can contribute to a
more [sustainable computing environment](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/05/5-ways-businesses-can-decrease-their-footprint-and-save-energy/).
Collectively, these small changes can make a significant difference in reducing
the environmental impact of the technology we rely on daily. So, let’s all take
a step towards green [computing](https://greenlivingguy.com/2006/04/vanity-fair-green-issue-gives-fifty-ways-to-save-the-planet/)
and do our part to protect our planet.
