Ok, ok, Let’s talk about the e-bike panic. Most likely you turn on your local news
lately, you might think a new plague is hitting our streets. There’s even a phrase
for it: E-Bike Panic. It isn’t a virus or a zombie outbreak. Instead, it’s teenagers
on fat-tire electric bikes. You see the headlines everywhere. They talk about “reckless”
riders. They show ER doctors discussing bone-crushing injuries. Some towns are even
trying to ban them from certain paths.

However, we [need to talk](https://greenlivingguy.com/2010/11/do-it-yourself-home-energy-audits-we-need-to-talk-about-this-book/)
about perspective. While we are all panicking about two-wheeled electric commuters,
we are ignoring a much larger, deadlier threat. We are letting a three-ton [elephant](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/04/grand-isle-resort-spa-introduces-first-phase-of-do-no-harm-policy-eliminates-single-use-plastic/)
sit in the room without saying a word. That elephant is the modern SUV.

Today, we are diving into the data. We will look at why e-bikes are getting a bad
rap while cars get a free pass. Let’s break down the stats, the psychology, and
the absolute hypocrisy of the “e-bike panic.”

### The Numbers Don’t Lie (Even If Headlines Do): E-Bike Panic

Let’s start with the cold, hard facts. According to a recent [report from Electrek](https://electrek.co/2026/05/26/america-is-panicking-about-e-bikes-while-ignoring-the-real-problem/),
roughly 135 people died in e-bike or e-scooter incidents in the U.S. last year.
Consequently, every one of those deaths is a tragedy. We should always strive for
zero fatalities on our roads.

But then, look at the other side of the ledger. [Cars kill over 40,000 people every](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/05/protecting-your-car-in-every-weather-condition/)
single year in the United States. Furthermore, [cars kill about 7,000 pedestrians annually](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/09/first-car-free-day-hudson-valley/).
This means cars are killing fifty times more pedestrians than all [e-bike and e-scooter](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/06/a-review-of-electric-battery-bicycle-solutions-for-college-transport/)
deaths combined. Yet, you rarely see a national panic about the “danger” of the
[Toyota](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/07/be-the-first-of-your-friends-and-family-to-see-toyotas-prius-plug-in-hybrid-rav4-ev-and-more-hybrid-vehicles/)
RAV4.

Interestingly, we’ve [tested hybrids like the RAV4](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/05/test-drive-results-2017-toyota-rav4-hybrid-electric-car)
here at Green Living Guy. They are great for fuel efficiency, but they are still
massive kinetic machines. When a 5,000-pound SUV hits a human, the outcome is usually
catastrophic. When a 70-pound e-bike hits something, it’s usually a skinned knee.

## Why We Fear the New and Ignore the Familiar: that E-Bike Panic

![A tiny drop of water labeled E-Bike Risks next to a massive flood labeled Car
Traffic](https://i0.wp.com/cdn.marblism.com/UehDZ-f2HKF.webp?w=780&quality=50&ssl
=1)

So, why are we freaking out about e-bikes? The answer lies in something called “
novelty bias.” Humans are notoriously bad at judging risk. We tend to fear new things
more than familiar dangers.

Because we see [cars every day](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/03/earth-day-comparison-apps-for-clean-cars-and-clean-transportation/),
they have become background noise. We accept the 40,000 deaths as the “price of
doing business” for a mobile society. It’s like a dripping faucet versus a flood.
The e-bike news cycle is the dripping faucet. It’s annoying. It’s new. It catches
your eye. Meanwhile, the car death rate is a literal flood pouring through the living
room window. But because the [window has been broken for 100 years](https://greenlivingguy.com/2012/05/window-fashions-leader-captures-product-of-the-year-for-silhouette-eco-friendly-with-literise-lifting-system/),
we just keep mopping the floor and complaining about the faucet.

We’ve seen this before in [alt-energy news](https://greenlivingguy.com/green-living-resources-eco-friendly-products/alt-energy-news/).
People panic about new battery technologies while ignoring the massive environmental
toll of traditional [fossil fuels](https://greenlivingguy.com/2010/11/real-world-concerns-about-battery-chargers-and-charging-stations-explained/).
It’s the same psychological trap.

## The Hypocrisy of “Safety” Regulations

![A minimalist lifestyle shot of a person on an e-bike in a protected lane](https://
i0.wp.com/cdn.marblism.com/UDkLfNsKuKa.webp?w=780&quality=50&ssl=1)

The double standard is truly staggering. Lawmakers are currently scrambling to regulate
e-bikes. They want to ensure a 15-year-old can’t ride [a bike](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/11/eco-friendly-work-options-a-greener-commute/)
that goes 20 mph. However, those same lawmakers have no problem letting a 16-year-
old [drive a 6,000-pound SUV](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/05/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-premium-all-wheel-drive-wins-aaas-best-overall-car-for-2022/).

Think about that for a second. We are worried about a kid on a bicycle, but we are
perfectly fine with that same kid [operating a tank on city](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/01/city-of-tyler-texas-agrees-to-extensive-sewer-system-upgrades-and-operational-improvements-to-comply-with-clean-water-act/)
streets. In fact, we often [blame the victim in car-pedestrian accidents](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/01/uks-commercial-bins-blamed-for-accidents/).
We tell pedestrians to “wear bright colors.” We tell them to “carry flags” across
the street. It’s absurd. It’s like giving a kid a Band-Aid for a paper cut while
they have a gaping wound on their neck.

We need to realize that [energy efficiency](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/11/energy-efficiency-is-now-worlds-number-one-fuel-source)
isn’t just about saving fuel. It’s about building a smarter, safer world. Moving
people in 70-pound [vehicles is infinitely more efficient](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/12/blink-charging-to-unveil-suite-of-next-generation-electric-vehicle-charging-products-at-ces-2022/)
and safer than moving them in 5,000-pound steel cages.

## E-Bikes: Part of the Solution, Not the Problem

Instead of being the “menace” the media portrays, e-bikes are actually a lifesaver.
Every person on an e-bike is a person who is NOT [driving a car](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/04/hyundai-ioniq-battery-test-drive-2018-plugin-hybrid-electric-car/).
Physics dictates that lighter, slower [vehicles are safer](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/02/autonomous-vehicle-safety-are-we-any-safer/)
for everyone.

When an e-bike replaces a car trip, the kinetic [energy on the road drops](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/01/coal-fall-share-boom-that-wasnt/)
significantly. This makes our streets quieter and [safer for children](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/03/chemical-furniture-retailers-phase-out-toxic-flame-retardant-chemicals-brings-safer-choices/).
In countries with high cycling rates, transportation deaths are much lower. They
don’t have a “secret” safety trick. They just have fewer cars.

Moreover, e-bikes allow people of all ages to get out and move. They provide mobility
to those who can’t afford a [car or can’t drive](https://greenlivingguy.com/2008/08/small-sleek-smart-car-driving-toward-greener-future/)
one. They are a tool for equity and environmental health.

## The Massive Scale of the Problem

![A minimalist comparison of a 6000lb SUV and a 70lb e-bike](https://i0.wp.com/cdn.
marblism.com/9FpUMmZ-pBF.webp?w=780&quality=50&ssl=1)

Let’s look at the “kinetic energy” argument. An SUV is roughly 80 times heavier
than an e-bike. If you are [hit by a car](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/08/global-demand-for-electric-cars-hits-the-accelerator/)
going 20 mph, you have a high chance of dying. If you are hit by an e-bike going
20 mph, you’re going to have a very bad day, but you will likely survive.

We are [focusing all our regulatory energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2013/01/energy-focus-drives-sustainable-led-lighting-solutions/)
on the 70-pound machine. Meanwhile, the 6,000-pound machines are getting bigger
and taller every year. Modern SUV hoods are now so high they create massive blind
spots. Drivers literally cannot see small children standing right in front of them.
Yet, where is the national panic about “SUV blind spot deaths”? It doesn’t exist
because we’ve normalized it.

## Responsibility Still Matters

Now, I’m not saying e-bike riders are perfect. Some riders act like jerks. Some
companies sell “e-bikes” that are actually unregistered motorcycles. These are real
issues.

We definitely need better rider education. We need to enforce rules about bike paths.
However, we must keep these issues in proportion. We shouldn’t let a few “hooligan”
riders distract us from the 40,000 people being [killed by cars](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/05/chris-paine-of-who-killed-the-electric-car-on-his-new-film-his-personal-fleet-and-why-he-thinks-evs-are-ready-to-rise-from-the-dead/).

We should focus on building [sustainable infrastructure](https://greenlivingguy.com/2020/07/wetland-loss-the-urgent-need-for-action).
Protected bike lanes keep everyone safe. They separate the 70-pound [bikes from the 5,000-pound cars](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/01/save-bike-car-sharing-best-options-for-getting-to-work/).
When we design [cities for people instead of just vehicles](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/04/ev-city-beijing-shows-the-power-of-electric-vehicles/),
everyone wins.

## Conclusion: Stop the Panic, Start the Progress

The e-bike panic is a classic case of missing the [forest for the trees](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/10/green-benefits-for-harvesting-timber/).
We are obsessing over a tiny increase in micromobility injuries while ignoring a
century-long massacre on our highways.

If we truly care about road safety, we should be encouraging e-bikes, not banning
them. We should be regulating the size and weight of cars, not just the speed of
bicycles.

It’s time to stop treating the dripping faucet like it’s the end of the world. Let’s
fix the broken window. Let’s make our streets safe for everyone, whether they are
on two wheels or four. But let’s be honest about which one is the real killer.
