## Earth’s Internal Battery: The US Geothermal Energy Gold Rush is Here out West

We all know there’s geothermal energy everywhere but the Wild West making this a
gold rush. For the Earth keeps a massive secret right beneath our feet. For decades,
we ignored the heat of the planet. However, everything is changing right now. The
United States is finally plugging into its “internal battery.” Specifically, a new“
geothermal gold rush” is sweeping through the American West. Consequently, four
[states are joining forces to lead](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/09/aceee-report-and-webinar-us-states-lead-on-energy-efficiency-in-2019/)
this charge. Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah just formed the Mountain West
Geothermal Consortium. Because of this partnership, we are looking at hundreds of
gigawatts of clean power. This isn’t just about small steam vents anymore. Instead,
it is about a massive technology shift. Ultimately, the goal is to provide 24/7
base-load [energy for a hungry grid](https://greenlivingguy.com/2013/12/sustainable-ferc-making-energy-policy-clearer/).

## The Mountain West Joins Forces

This new geothermal energy out West task force for The Mountain West Geothermal
Consortium. It now marks a major milestone. Specifically, Arizona, Colorado, New
Mexico, and Utah are now coordinating their efforts. They also want to unlock the“
firm” power hiding in the rock. Meanwhile, other states like Nevada are already
showing huge potential. In fact, New Mexico alone might sit on a 163-gigawatt gold
mine. Furthermore, Nevada has another 135 gigawatts waiting. Therefore, the total
potential across the US is staggering. Some estimates suggest we could recover 300
to 500 gigawatts. In comparison, that is enough to power almost half the country.
Because the heat is constant, it doesn’t matter if the sun shines or the wind blows.

### Geothermal Energy gone Mountain West Constortium: Drill Baby Drill!

Clearly, the [shift to geothermal energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/08/two-coal-sites-highlighting-renewable-energy-shift/)
is becoming a regional priority out West. Consequently, governors from these four
states are streamlining regulations. Moreover, they are working together to attract
massive private investment. In addition, the US [Department of Energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2012/02/energy-department-announces-student-teams-new-location-for-solar-decathlon-2013/)
is throwing its weight behind these projects. Because the technology is maturing,
costs are dropping fast. Therefore, geothermal is no longer just a niche curiosity.
Instead, it is becoming a cornerstone of our [clean energy future](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/12/the-new-electrification-workforce-powers-the-future/).
As a result, we are seeing a [bipartisan push for energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/04/on-the-road-to-bipartisan-energy-efficiency-legislation/)
independence.

## Unlocking the Heat: EGS and Superhot Rock

How do we actually get this energy? Traditionally, we needed natural hot springs.
However, new technology allows us to create our own conditions. Specifically, we
are talking about Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). In this process, engineers
drill deep into hot, dry rock. After that, they inject water to [create a network](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/11/local-food-networks-create-environmental-impact/)
of cracks. Because the rock is hot, the water turns into steam. Consequently, that
steam spins turbines to create electricity. Furthermore, we are exploring “superhot
rock” technology. This involves drilling even deeper where [temperatures are extreme](https://greenlivingguy.com/2012/06/a123-systems-introduces-breakthrough-lithium-ion-battery-technology-that-optimizes-performance-in-extreme-temperatures/).
Specifically, we are looking at depths of five kilometers or more.

![Cross section diagram of geothermal energy system with pipes circulating hot water
underground for out west](https://i0.wp.com/greenlivingguy.com/wp-content/uploads/
2026/07/IMG_3117.webp?resize=780%2C975&quality=50&ssl=1 "IMG_3117 - The Green Living

Moreover, the drilling techniques come straight from the [oil and gas](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/05/methane-rule-is-a-positive-step-forward-but-fails-to-address-emissions-from-existing-operations/)
industry. Because those companies already know how to drill deep, they are pivotally
important. In fact, firms like Halliburton are now advising the consortium. Similarly,
startups like Fervo [Energy are using horizontal drilling](https://greenlivingguy.com/2009/12/exploring-the-power-of-geothermal-energy-drill-baby-drill/)
to maximize output. Therefore, we are repurposing fossil [fuel tech for a green](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/11/green-gas-production-set-to-increase/)
revolution. Indeed, this is a win-win for everyone involved. For instance, workers
can transition their skills without starting over. Consequently, the “gold rush”
is as much about labor as it is about energy. Ultimately, we are building a bridge
from the old world to the new.

## The Geothermal Energy AI Catalyst: Why Now Out West?

You might wonder why this is happening so fast. Actually, the answer lies in your
pocket and in the cloud. Specifically, AI [data centers are starving for power](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/01/how-data-centers-are-using-renewable-energy-to-lessen-their-carbon-footprint/).
Because these centers run 24/7, they need constant electricity. In contrast, [wind and solar](https://greenlivingguy.com/2020/01/falling-wind-solar-power-costs-aid-global-climate-action/)
are variable. Therefore, tech giants are looking for “always-on” carbon-free sources.
Consequently, Microsoft and [Google are showing massive interest in geothermal](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/08/geothermal-company-dandelion-energy-partnering-with-hudson-solar-to-bring-100-renewable-energy-to-hudson-valley-and-capitol-region-of-ny/).
Indeed, AI is acting as a massive catalyst for this industry. Because [data centers need gigawatts of power](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/01/data-center-energy-technology-cuts-power-consumption/),
they are willing to pay for it. Furthermore, they need this power now, not in twenty
years.

![Modern building with illuminated server racks near wind turbines and solar panels

com/greenlivingguy.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_3118.webp?resize=780%2C780&
quality=50&ssl=1 "IMG_3118 - The Green Living Guy")

As a result, geothermal is the perfect partner for the AI boom. Specifically, it
offers the reliability that the tech sector craves. Moreover, it allows companies
to [meet their climate goals without compromising performance](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/03/honda-insight-hybrid-performance-meets-affordability/).
In fact, many are calling [geothermal “the missing piece” of the energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/04/toyota-energy-commitment-to-a-greener-future/)
puzzle. Because we are [seeing a massive surge in electricity](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/09/smart-meter-enabled-technology-could-see-electric-car-owners-cut-bills-and-make-money/)
demand, we need every tool available. Therefore, geothermal is moving from the sidelines
to the center stage. Clearly, the marriage of AI and [geothermal is a powerful](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/02/ball-state-geothermal-harnessing-the-power-of-the-earth/)
combination. In addition, it ensures that our digital [future is powered by sustainable](https://greenlivingguy.com/2010/09/ac-propulsion-helps-x-prize-winner-e-tracer-with-new-electric-drive-system/)
means.

## Repurposing the Oil Field

The transition from [oil to geothermal](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/02/new-york-suburbs-run-on-oil-how-the-andersons-broke-away/)
is quite poetic. Specifically, the same rigs that once pulled oil are now pulling
heat. Because the geology is similar, the equipment is often interchangeable. Moreover,
the expertise required to map underground reservoirs is identical. Therefore, the
[oil and gas](https://greenlivingguy.com/2024/11/climate-energy-and-emissions-impacts-on-the-2024-us-election/)
sector is essentially an “incubator” for geothermal. In fact, many oilfield service
companies are already finding more [work in clean energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/04/oregon-celebrates-launch-of-statewide-clean-energy-works-program/).
Similarly, geologists are using AI to find “hidden” geothermal systems. Consequently,
we are seeing a high-tech makeover of the drilling industry. Indeed, this is not
your grandfather’s energy sector.

![Geothermal energy plant with steam rising set against mountainous landscape](https://
i0.wp.com/greenlivingguy.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_3119.webp?resize=780%
2C975&quality=50&ssl=1 "IMG_3119 - The Green Living Guy")

Furthermore, this transition helps solve the intermittency problem. While [energy efficiency is now the world’s number one fuel source](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/11/energy-efficiency-is-now-worlds-number-one-fuel-source),
we still need raw generation. Because [geothermal provides ](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/02/renewable-energy-sources-5-emerging-watch-out-for/)
base-load[ power](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/02/renewable-energy-sources-5-emerging-watch-out-for/),
it supports the entire grid. Specifically, it makes the grid more resilient against
weather events. In addition, it reduces the need for massive battery storage. Therefore,
the investment in drilling is an investment in stability. Ultimately, we are turning
the skills of the [past into the solutions of the future](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/03/living-in-the-futures-past-exclusive-with-jeff-bridges/).
As a result, the American West is becoming a [global leader in advanced energy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/05/renewable-energy-jobs-benefit-the-economy/).

## Challenges and the Path Forward

Naturally, there are hurdles to overcome. Specifically, permitting can still take
a long time. However, the Mountain West Geothermal Consortium is working to fix
that. Because they are coordinating across state lines, they can standardize the
process. Moreover, the [cost](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/07/china-reducing-solar-costs/)
of drilling remains high compared to solar. Therefore, we need continued innovation
to bring prices down. In addition, water usage is a concern in the arid West. Consequently,
closed-loop systems are being [developed to recycle](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/02/economics-of-forest-biomass-raise-hurdles-for-rural-development/)
every drop. Clearly, we have work to do, but the momentum is unstoppable. Indeed,
the potential is too big to ignore.

In fact, the shift toward geothermal is as exciting as the transition to [hybrid electric cars](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/10/test-drive-results-honda-clarity-plugin-hybrid-electric-car-austin-city-limits-2019).
Because both represent a smarter way to [move and live](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/09/green-living-tips-how-to-produce-less-waste-when-moving/).
Specifically, we are [moving away from combustion and toward efficiency](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/01/street-light-fixture-standards-a-move-towards-energy-efficiency/).
Furthermore, we are seeing a culture shift in how we view the planet. Instead of
just taking, we are learning to harness what is already there. Similarly, projects
like [planting 10,000 trees](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/08/help-green-living-guy-plus-magicquoteapp-plant-10000-trees-magicquotetrees-campaign)
help balance the ecosystem while we build our infrastructure. Therefore, geothermal
is just one part of a larger, greener vision. Ultimately, the gold rush is about
more than money; it is about survival.

## Conclusion: The Battery is Plugged In

The US geothermal gold rush is no longer a dream. Specifically, it is a multi-billion
dollar reality. Because the Mountain West Geothermal Consortium is active, we are
seeing real progress. Moreover, the [technology to tap into the Earth’s](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/04/usda-gives-thumbs-up-to-green-earth-technologies/)
core is finally here. Therefore, we are looking at a future where our [power is clean](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/02/nrg-solar-energy-a-shift-from-nuclear-power/),
constant, and domestic. In fact, the “internal battery” of our planet is finally
being plugged into the grid. Consequently, the American West is [leading the world](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/05/canadian-to-lead-world-meteorological-organization/)
into a new era of energy. Clearly, the heat is on, and the future is looking bright.
Indeed, it is time to embrace the power beneath our feet.
