## Looks Tough, But the MPG Needs a Jolt: Toyota Tacoma TRD PreRunner Xtracab

Picking the right truck often feels like a balancing act. You want the rugged looks
and the utility, but you also want efficiency. Therefore, testing the 2026 Toyota
Tacoma TRD PreRunner Xtracab was a journey of mixed emotions. This truck looks ready
to tackle any trail with its lifted stance and aggressive tires. However, beneath
that tough exterior lies a powertrain that feels like a bridge to the past rather
than a [leap into the future](https://greenlivingguy.com/2010/12/advanced-vehicles-a-leap-towards-greener-future/).

The Tacoma [remains](https://greenlivingguy.com/2016/02/trina-solar-remained-worlds-top-solar-pv-module-producer-in-2015-says-globaldata/)
a legend in the midsize truck world for good reason. It is durable, capable, and
retains its value like almost nothing else on the road. Specifically, the PreRunner
trim targets a unique buyer who wants the off-road aesthetic and towing [power without the heavy cost](https://greenlivingguy.com/2012/01/as-electric-vehicles-take-charge-costs-power-down/)
of a 4WD system. While it succeeds in style, the fuel [economy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/02/6-tremendous-ways-that-cannabis-is-changing-the-world/)
figures suggest it is time for a change.

### The Toyota Tacoma TRD PreRunner Xtracab Layout: Two Seats and a Long Bed

![Dashboard and front interior of a Toyota Tacoma TRD prorunner showing steering
wheel, digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system, climate controls,
and center console](https://i0.wp.com/greenlivingguy.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/

The first thing you notice about this specific Tacoma is the “Xtracab” configuration.
Unlike the four-door Double Cab, this is a dedicated two-passenger machine. Consequently,
this design [choice allows for a massive 6-foot bed](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/08/linen-ultimate-eco-friendly-bedding-choice/).
If you are a solo contractor or an outdoor enthusiast with a lot of gear, this layout
is perfect.

Furthermore, the cabin space behind the front seats provides a surprising amount
of interior storage. You can lock away your tools or groceries without worrying
about them in the bed. However, if you ever need to give a third friend a ride,
you are out of luck. Toyota has leaned into the “work truck” vibe here, prioritizing
utility over passenger volume. As a result, the Xtracab feels focused and purpose-
built.

## Power and Performance: Quick but Thirsty

Under the hood, you will find the 2.4L i-FORCE turbocharged inline-4 engine. This
powertrain delivers 278 horsepower and a solid 317 lb-ft of torque. In fact, this
Tacoma is surprisingly quick off the line. During our testing, it hit 0-60 [mph in about 7 seconds](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/04/li-ion-motors-corp-to-showcase-the-inizio0-60-mph-in-3-4-seconds-at-earth-day-2011-in-nyc/).
This is quite impressive for a non-hybrid truck.

Additionally, the 8-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, [keeping the turbo in its power](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/04/more-reasons-to-keep-building-our-own-electric-vehicles-j-d-power-and-associates-reports-despite-rising-fuel-prices-the-outlook-for-%e2%80%9cgreen%e2%80%9d-vehicles-remains-limited-for-the-forese/)
band. Because the PreRunner is rear-wheel drive only, it is lighter than its 4WD
siblings. This weight reduction translates to a more nimble feel on the pavement.
Nevertheless, that [power comes at a cost](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/01/renewable-power-costs-plummet-many-sources-now-cheaper-than-fossil-fuels-worldwide/)
at the pump. The EPA rates this [truck at 20 city](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/02/electric-city-food-trucks-deliver-sustainability-to-the-bronx/),
24 highway, and 22 combined MPG. In our real-world testing, we struggled to maintain
that 22 MPG average. For a modern vehicle in 2026, those numbers feel outdated.

[Driving the PreRunner is a visceral experience](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/09/2015-bmw-740ld-test-drive-results/).
Because it uses a leaf-spring rear suspension, the ride can feel a bit busy over
bumpy roads. In contrast, the higher-end Tacoma trims feature a coil-spring setup
that is much more refined. Despite the “trucklike” bounce, the handling remains
precise. The steering is confident, and the truck feels stable even when cornering
with its 10.8-inch ground clearance.

Inside, the tech is a bright spot. Specifically, the digital gauge cluster is sharp
and easy to read. Additionally, the wireless Apple CarPlay and Android [Auto worked flawlessly during our test drive](https://greenlivingguy.com/2013/03/nice-work-lexus-4-of-the-5-cars-at-the-auto-show/).
We also appreciated the TRD PreRunner Upgrade Package, which added a wireless charging
pad and a trailer brake controller. These features make the Tacoma feel modern,
even if the engine under the hood is still burning through gas at an old-school
rate.

## The Toyota Tacoma TRD “PreRunner” Xtracab Identity: Style without the 4WD Price Tag

The PreRunner name is a callback to [Toyota’s desert racing](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/03/racing-goes-hybrid-electric-toyota-motorsports/)
heritage. It is designed to look like a 4WD off-roader while maintaining a 4×2 drivetrain.
As a result, you save about $4,000 compared to a full 4×4 [model](https://greenlivingguy.com/2012/03/energy-star-leaders-achieve-president-obamas-energy-efficiency-goal-for-buildings-epas-energy-star-provides-model-for-superior-building-energy-performance-and-savings/).
You still get the electronic locking rear differential and the all-terrain tires.
For many buyers, this is a smart trade-off.

However, if you [live in an area](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/11/microgrid-electric-bus-first-went-live-this-week/)
with heavy snow or deep mud, the RWD-only setup will be a limitation. But for those
who mostly stay on pavement or dry trails, the PreRunner offers the “tough truck”
look and 6,500 lbs of [towing](https://greenlivingguy.com/2019/07/development-continues-on-built-ford-tough-all-electric-f-150-watch-prototype-tow-more-than-1-million-pounds/)
capacity for a much lower price. The base price sits around $39,735, with our [tested model reaching](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/04/ecocar-daytona-test-vehicle-reaches-65-mph-at-daytona/)
$41,839. It is a compelling value proposition for the right buyer.

## The Missing Piece: Why This Tacoma Needs a Jolt

guy-6a5eec75b7bad.png?w=780&quality=50&ssl=1 "IMG_3265")

This is where we need to have a serious conversation about the [future](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/04/japan-energy-needs-solar-for-future-resilience/)
of the Tacoma. While the gas-only i-FORCE engine is capable, the 22 MPG combined
rating is a clear sign that things [need to change](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/04/climate-change-needs-to-be-tackled-like-a-weapon-of-mass-destruction/).
We believe the real path forward is a full transition to lithium [batteries and a stronger electric motor](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/10/fire-station-82-in-hollywood-receives-its-first-electric-fire-truck/)
across all trims.

[Toyota already offers the i-Force Max hybrid](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/08/ford-plus-toyota-collaborate-developing-new-hybrid-system/)
system on other Tacoma models. That system pumps out 326 hp and a massive 465 lb-
ft of torque. More importantly, it provides the low-end [torque that trucks need while improving efficiency](https://greenlivingguy.com/2023/08/2023-ford-escape-plug-in-hybrid-torque-efficiency-range/).
Specifically, adding a more robust [hybrid or EV](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/11/green-car-reports-best-car-to-buy-chrysler-pacifica-hybrid-named-2018-green-car-reports-best-car-to-buy/)
powertrain to the PreRunner would solve its biggest weakness. Imagine this same
truck with 30+ [MPG and instant electric](https://greenlivingguy.com/2013/07/the-prius-plug-in-challenge-learning-to-drive-an-electric-car/)
torque for towing. The platform is ready for it, but the PreRunner is still waiting
for its “jolt.”

## Conclusion

The 2026 Toyota Tacoma TRD PreRunner Xtracab is a fantastic tool for the right job.
It is tough, relatively affordable, and great to look at. However, the environmental
impact and the fuel costs are hard to ignore. As we [move toward a more sustainable](https://greenlivingguy.com/2021/09/how-to-move-houses-sustainably-tips-on-eco-friendly-moving/)
future, we hope to see Toyota bring its best battery tech to the entire Tacoma lineup.

If you are looking for a dedicated work truck with a long bed and don’t mind the
[fuel](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/04/how-does-hybrid-fuel-economy-work/) bills,
the PreRunner is a solid choice. But if you are waiting for a truck that truly embraces
the next generation of green tech, you might want to look at Toyota’s hybrid offerings
or keep an eye on our [electric vehicle reviews](https://greenlivingguy.com/category/electric-vehicles/)
