## Mazda CX-70 Inline6 3.3 Turbo

Mazda CX-70 Inline6 3.3 Turbo 2026 Test Drive was Soulful, Smooth, and Stuck in
the Past on Efficiency

## Further impressions on performance

Mazda has always understood the emotional side of driving. The Mazda CX-70 Inline6
3.3 Turbo proves that point. It brings sharp styling, confident performance, and
a driver-focused personality to the midsize SUV market. At the same time, it also
delivers the comfort and technology buyers expect from a modern premium vehicle.

From behind the wheel, the CX-70 feels more engaging than many traditional two-row
SUVs. The steering responds quickly. The chassis feels composed. Moreover, the available
turbocharged inline-six delivers strong acceleration, especially when Interstate
or the road opens up, Mazda CX-70 Inline6 3.3 Turbo.

However, Mazda does not chase performance alone. The CX-70 Inline6 also focuses
on balance. Its suspension keeps the SUV controlled through corners while still
providing a [comfortable ride during everyday driving](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/07/kia-soul-test-drive-2014-a-detailed-review/).
As a result, it works just as well on a long highway trip as it does on a winding
back road.

Inside, Mazda CX-70 Inline6 continues that driver-first approach. The cabin feels
clean and upscale. Controls sit within easy reach. Meanwhile, quality materials
and thoughtful details give the Mazda CX-70 Inline6 a more premium character.

## Fuel Economy on the Mazda CX-70 Inline6 ?

### 2026 Mazda CX-70 Inline6: Specs Overview

The CX-70 is essentially the two-row version of the three-row Mazda CX-90. Both
models share a platform, dimensions, engines, and much of the cabin. However, the
CX-70 loses the third row and gains a more aggressive front-end design.

That setup makes sense for buyers who want a roomy crossover but do not need to
chauffeur a soccer team.

## Driving Impressions: A Truly Special Mazda CX-70 Inline6

The CX-70’s turbocharged inline-6 is its star.

The engine produces plenty of low-speed muscle. As a result, the CX-70 moves quickly
from a stop. Merging onto a highway also feels effortless. The engine delivers refined
thrust without feeling strained.

Moreover, it sounds great. There is a natural, mechanical character to the inline-
6 that most four-cylinder hybrid systems cannot replicate. Under hard acceleration,
the engine becomes more vocal. However, it never sounds cheap or coarse.

![Open Mazda SUV cargo area showing a spacious rear storage compartment, retractable

com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_9721.jpeg?resize=300%2C400&ssl=1)

The 340-horsepower Turbo S version feels especially strong. Car and Driver recorded
a 6.2-second 0-to-60-mph [time](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/11/the-bmw-ix-flow-featuring-e-ink-makes-it-to-times-2022-list-of-best-inventions/)
in a CX-70 Turbo S. That is quick enough for everyday driving and entertaining enough
for a weekend back-road run.

![Close up of a gray mazda suv front fender showing the inline6 badge and black
trim above the wheel arch](https://i0.wp.com/greenlivingguy.com/wp-content/uploads/

The eight-speed automatic usually keeps up with the engine. Nevertheless, some reviewers
noted occasional slow shifts. The transmission can also hesitate when responding
to steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The CX-70 handles better than most mainstream midsize crossovers. The steering provides
useful feedback. The brakes feel firm and responsive. In addition, the body stays
composed through corners.

On ramps, the CX-70 feels genuinely fun. Many [BMW X3 and X5 drivers](https://greenlivingguy.com/2012/03/bmw-ev-driver-range-challenges-for-long-trips/)
would find its road feel surprisingly familiar. That is a serious compliment in
this class.

## Interior: Upscale Without Trying Too Hard

Inside, the CX-70 presents like a luxury-brand vehicle.

The test vehicle featured a black-and-tan cabin. The look felt classy, casual, and
upscale at the same time. Materials throughout the cabin appeared carefully selected.
Stitching and trim details also helped justify the CX-70’s near-luxury pricing.

=300%2C400&ssl=1)

The available Napa leather seats felt firm and supportive. Some shoppers may prefer
softer cushions. Nevertheless, the seats worked well during longer drives. They
also [provided good support](https://greenlivingguy.com/2010/10/treehugger-provides-further-supporting-evidence-to-electric-cars/)
during cornering.

Green Living Guy")

The infotainment display sits high on the dashboard. It remains easy to read in
bright sunlight. Mazda also continues to use a rotary controller on the center console.

That layout may seem old-fashioned to some shoppers. However, it can reduce eyes-
off-road time. You can operate many functions by feel rather than reaching toward
the screen.

![Car dashboard with tan trim a widescreen infotainment display showing the communication
menu and dual zone climate controls](https://i0.wp.com/greenlivingguy.com/wp-content/
uploads/2026/08/IMG_9712.jpeg?resize=300%2C400&ssl=1 "IMG_9712 - The Green Living
Guy")

Space is another strength. The CX-70 provides plenty of room for four adults. The
rear doors open wide, which makes entry and exit easier. The rear seat also [offers a comfortable driving](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/01/c-max-energi-hybrid-offers-true-electric-driving/)
position for most passengers.

Still, the system is not perfect. Car and Driver described it as needlessly complex.
Smartphone mirroring can also feel less intuitive than a straightforward touchscreen
interface.

The fifth passenger should be smaller and leaner, however. The center position is
best treated as occasional seating.

## Fuel Economy: Respectable, But Not Good Enough

The Mazda CX-70 Turbo S carries an EPA rating of **23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway,
and 25 mpg combined**. Those numbers make the CX-70 surprisingly efficient for a
powerful, [premium midsize SUV](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/05/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-premium-all-wheel-drive-wins-aaas-best-overall-car-for-2022/).

Mazda pairs its turbocharged inline-six engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
As a result, the system helps [reduce fuel consumption during everyday](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/02/everyday-essential-items-for-green-living/)
driving. It also supports smoother acceleration and better efficiency when traffic
conditions constantly change.

Moreover, the CX-70 Turbo S does not sacrifice performance simply to [improve fuel economy](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/01/improving-vehicle-fuel-economy-to-create-570000-us-jobs/).
The turbocharged engine delivers strong power when you press the accelerator. At
the same time, the mild-hybrid system helps manage [energy more efficiently](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/04/exploring-state-energy-efficiency-the-aceee-scorecard/).

Highway driving highlights another advantage. With an EPA estimate of **28 mpg**,
the CX-70 can handle longer [road trips without demanding constant fuel](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/05/summer-road-trips-tips-for-fuel-savings/)
stops. Therefore, drivers get the space and [performance of a larger SUV](https://greenlivingguy.com/2022/08/acura-announces-2024-all-electric-mode-the-zdx-performance-suv/)
while maintaining respectable highway efficiency.

Meanwhile, the **23 mpg city rating** remains competitive for a vehicle with this
level of [power and standard all-wheel drive](https://greenlivingguy.com/2017/07/wind-energy-power-driving-american-economy/).
Stop-and-go traffic typically hurts SUV fuel economy. However, Mazda uses electrification
and modern engine management to help limit those losses.

Overall, the **25 mpg combined rating** creates a strong [balance between performance and efficiency](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/11/cloud-computing-balancing-efficiency-and-ecology/).
The CX-70 Turbo S still feels powerful and responsive. Yet, it also shows how mild-
hybrid technology can reduce fuel consumption without fundamentally [changing the driving](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/08/sustainability-reporting-data-drives-corporate-change/)
experience.

### Typical Gas Turbo: Give me more Electrified

Those numbers are respectable for a large, powerful all-wheel-drive crossover with
a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-6. However, “respectable” is not the same as impressive.

In 2026, a mild-hybrid system should do more than smooth the engine’s stop-start
behavior.

Consumer Guide measured 23.8 mpg over 188 miles. The driving mix included 60% [city driving and 40% highway](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/02/concrete-buildings-as-smart-cities-future-of-infrastructure/)
driving. The Drive [averaged 23.2 mpg over 398 miles](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/08/chevrolet-cruze-eco-averages-64-mpg-over-9552-miles/).
Meanwhile, [Car and Driver observed 22 mpg](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/01/the-mercedes-s400-hybrid-a-luxurious-and-sustainable-option/)
overall.

On the other hand, Car and Driver [recorded 29 mpg](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/05/record-high-memorial-day-gas-prices-major-ad-web-push-this-week-for-60-mpg-standard/)
during its 75-mph highway test. That [result shows the Mazda](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/01/mazda-cx-50-2026-review-test-drive-results/)
CX-70 Inline6 can be reasonably efficient during steady cruising.  Unfortunately,
most drivers do not live on a perfectly flat highway.

City traffic, winter weather, short trips, heavy loads, and enthusiastic driving
will pull the number down. In addition, S models require premium-grade gasoline.
Therefore, the real [cost of operating](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/02/philips-spacewise-led-system-selected-to-participate-in-gsas-green-proving-ground-program-for-potential-to-reduce-lighting-energy-and-operational-costs-by-50-to-75-percent/)
the Turbo S is higher than the window sticker suggests.

The 48-volt system helps. Yet it does not transform the CX-70 into an efficient
vehicle. It is mostly a token gesture toward electrification.

## The Green Living Guy Efficiency Critique

Mazda deserves credit for [developing a smooth and powerful](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/09/california-green-business-sunlight-power/)
inline-6. The engine provides character that many modern SUVs lack.

However, Mazda should push this lineup further toward electrification.

A stronger hybrid system could allow the CX-70 to shut off its gasoline engine more
often. It could also [provide longer periods of electric](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/05/innovative-retail-electricity-provider-combines-new-product-with-evgosm-to-drive-ev-adoption-in-texas/)
operation in traffic. That would lower [fuel consumption where large SUVs typically waste](https://greenlivingguy.com/2015/03/virgin-airlines-fuel-create-new-biofuel-for-its-planes/)
the most fuel.

Mazda already has plug-in-hybrid technology in the CX-70 and CX-90 lineup. The CX-
70 PHEV offers a better path for eco-conscious buyers who want the model’s comfort,
style, and driving position.

The [PHEV](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/07/electric-evolution-miev-a-victorious-display-of-power/)
can handle short daily trips with electric power when charged regularly. Then, it
can use gasoline for longer road trips. That flexibility makes it a better fit for
drivers who want to reduce fuel use without committing to a full [battery-electric vehicle](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/05/annual-alt-fuel-show-at-randalls-island-nyc-by-nyc-parks-and-recreation-its-always-great/).

Our recent [Toyota Prius Nightshade Plug-In Hybrid test drive](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/03/toyota-prius-nightshade-plug-in-hybrid-test-drive-results)
shows how much daily driving can change when a vehicle offers real EV range. For
a broader look at how electric vehicles developed, read our [history of EVs](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/08/electric-vehicle-start-the-origins-of-evs).

If Mazda wants to become the [driving enthusiast’s green brand](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/07/hyundais-fuel-efficiency-driving-brand-loyalty/),
it needs to put its electrified versions front and center. A 48-volt assist system
is not enough.

## Mazda CX-70 Inline6 Pricing and Value

For 2026, the CX-70 3.3 Turbo lineup includes:

 * **Preferred:** $43,780
 * **Premium:** $47,810
 * **Premium Plus:** $51,000
 * **S Premium:** $54,770
 * **S Premium Plus:** $58,200

The [test vehicle was a Turbo S Premium](https://greenlivingguy.com/2025/02/mazda3-plus-hatch-turbo-premium-2025-test-drive-results/)
Plus finished in Polymetal Gray Metallic. It included floor mats, a cargo organizer,
illuminated door-sill plates, special paint, a logo welcome light, and a cargo cover.

The final price reached **$59,825, including destination**.

That price creates a value problem. The CX-90 offers an extra row and starts about
$3,500 lower. Although the CX-70 makes sense for buyers who do not need seven-passenger
capacity, shoppers should compare both models before signing.

Consumer Guide gave the CX-70 an A for room and comfort and fit and finish. It also
received B+ grades for [power and performance](https://greenlivingguy.com/2018/05/unlocking-the-power-of-lexus-hybrid-performance/),
fuel economy, and value. The publication named the CX-70 to its 2026 Best Buy list.

Car and Driver gave the CX-70 an 8.5 out of 10. Its strengths included good power,
nimble handling, and handsome design. Its criticisms included the complicated infotainment
system, occasional slow shifting, and pricing that overlaps with the CX-90.

## Green Verdict: Buy the PHEV Instead

The 2026 [Mazda CX-70 Turbo](https://greenlivingguy.com/2026/05/mazda-cx-70-turbo-s-premium-plus-2026-test-drive-results/)
S is soulful, smooth, comfortable, and fun. It delivers a near-luxury cabin and
handling that outclasses most mainstream crossovers.

However, its efficiency story falls short.

Getting 23 to 25 mpg combined from a large turbocharged inline-6 is understandable.
Paying premium [fuel prices for those numbers](https://greenlivingguy.com/2011/01/ml450-hybrid-46-percent-better-fuel-economy-however-lets-see-the-numbers/)
is less appealing. Calling the system a [mild hybrid](https://greenlivingguy.com/2014/07/test-drive-results-for-the-2014-bmw-535d-on-answers-com/)
also does not change the fact that it cannot provide meaningful electric-only driving.

For buyers who prioritize driving feel above all else, the CX-70 Turbo S remains
a compelling choice. For eco-conscious drivers, however, the **CX-70 PHEV is [the Green Living](https://greenlivingguy.com/the-green-living-guy-by-seth-leitman/)
Guy-recommended specification**.

The bottom line is simple: Mazda built a beautiful powertrain. Now it needs to electrify
it properly.
